Genetic Genealogy

While the Y-DNA test specifically targets males and focuses solely on the Y-Chromosome inherited from their father, the Family Finder test examines matching DNA across the remaining 44 non-sex chromosomes. This test is suitable for both males and females, allowing for a comprehensive analysis of all family lines.

While the Y-DNA test gives a result which is evaluating the same Y-DNA passed from father to each son starting from the beginning, the Family Finder testing is looking for matches in a highly variable combination of genes and is effective back for 6-8 generations.

To ensure we are investigating the correct lineage, Y-DNA testing is valuable. It helps us determine the appropriate direction for our research. Subsequently, the Family Finder test allows us to identify and label each individual within that lineage. Finally, we employ the conventional genealogical process, commonly known as paper trail genealogy, to gather supporting evidence for each specific family line.

The Guild of One-Name Studies is the worldwide centre of excellence in one-name studies and promotes the interests of both the individuals and groups who are engaged in them. It was established in 1979 and registered as a charity in 1989. We welcome content related to the Yates name. You can contact us at yates@one-name.org
