Carlene Conversations
Carlene R. Hegi was born 6 May 1942, AZ (daughter of Carl Otto Hegi and Helen Louise Barbee) and died 27 Sep 2013, AZ. Carlene first Married a Mr. Chesser born Abt 1942. They had the following Children: Chuck C. Chesser and Heidi M. Chesser. Carlene married Thomas G. Braswell 17 Jun 1968 in Imperial Co., CA. Lastly, Carlene married James Frank Warner (son of Frank Wawrzyniak and Irene Bokina) born 23 Apr 1930, IL and died 7 Apr 2013, AZ and was buried Holy Cross Cemetery, Maricopa Co., AZ.
Carlene died peacefully Friday, September 27, 2013 from complications after surgery. Carlene attended Buckeye Union High School, Class of 1960 and received a MA from University of Phoenix in 1992. She married the late James F. Warner in 1980. Carlene retired as Division Vice President of Human Resources from Belden in 2003. She had started with Western Electric in 1968 as a factory associate and was continuously promoted throughout a long career to Human Resources Manager and moved with its subsidiaries and spin-offs as a Vice President.
After retirement, she volunteered for many years with Channel 12 Call for Action. She also pursued interests in genealogy, arts and gardening. She had become a Master Gardener and maintained a cactus gardening blog. For the last few years, she also cared for her late husband, Jim. Carlene is survived by her children: Chuck Chesser and his wife Vicki of Denver, CO and Heidi Rybar and her husband Ray of Camp Verde, AZ; stepdaughters Christine Pinkston and Lorri Warner of Virginia Beach, VA. She is also survived by her grandson, August Chesser; her sister, Margaruite Rains and brothers, John Hegi and Carlton Hegi; her nieces Cheryl Swafford and Cheli Astraus and nephew Randy Killman.
While her immediate families miss her dearly, her cousins who worked with her through her genealogy pursuits miss her as well. Over a 12 year span three of us solved many family mysteries and hunted together. We shared a common family connection of the Laswell family and yet today I still think I can just e-mail Carlene and she will have a great response or suggestion. That's the nature of a life span, it happen quickly and hers seems like it flew by to us. As genealogists we like our facts and sometimes finding a death date allows us to prove something important to someone. I have dutifully entered her date in the proper locations but I didn't have any satisfaction at all by doing so. I know she would want it all properly recorded and shared but I am only doing grudgingly.
Ronald Eugene Yates is the 2 x cousin of Carlene R. Hegi

June 27, 2001 To: warnech@msn.com Subject: Harry Elmer Yates Carlene: This is my father. Let me know who you are and what your interest is, OK? thanks, jim yates, Casey, Illinois. PS. I replied on the message board also.

6/27/2001: Hello, Jim, So glad to hear from you. My great grandparents were Emma Clingman and David Sherman Laswell. Jessie Leah Yates was my grandmother's (Alma Ruth Laswell) oldest sister. Since you mentioned that Harry Elmer Yates is your father, but did not mention that Jessie was your mother, can I assume that you are a child from a marriage after Jessie's death? If Jessie was your mother, then we are first cousins once removed. I have been actively involved in genealogy research on my grandmother's ancestors. My mother died when I was quite young and then I didn't see my mother's grandparents after my mother's death, so I never knew anything about her family. My research, aided by some basic information obtained from another cousin, listed Jessie as married to Harry, and this led me to look for info on the Ancestry.com site. Perhaps you can help me out. I have Bud, Fred, Marjorie, Lucille and Carl Bernell Yates as children of Jessie and Harry. Since I have no James, I'm now wondering if I'm completely wrong, or is there more to this that I'm missing? Since you found my post, can I assume you are also a genealogy aficionado? I would love to share information with you if you are interested. Just let me know. Also, I would like the actual birth and death dates, as well as marriage date and place of Harry and Jessie, along with info on the children. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Carlene Warner

27 Jun 2001 From: Jim and Ruth Yates To: Carlene Warner; Carlene: Really good to hear from you. You have a lot of it correct. I am Harry's youngest son (although 64 now) by his second wife, my mother, Georgia (Wallace, Tingley) Yates who went to be Dad's housekeeper after Jesse's death. The only Laswells I knew were "Uncle Dink" (Martin) and Aunt Gertie who Dad took us to visit when I was about 11 years old. I have visited their graves several times since then. I did get to know John Laswell and his wife years later. He's dead now but she is still alive and on the farm I think. I knew Camille, Dink and Gertie's daughter; she died a year or so ago. I met a Jerry Laswell some years ago that was family but I heard he died some years ago also. I had Jesse's stone re-set a couple of years ago in the Chrisman,IL. cemetery along with Dad's and one of their daughters who died young. I think possibly the best way for me to give you a peek at the genealogy I have is to send you an invitation to a website I have named "The Yates Story"...I posted what info I have on there.
If after you see it and see the pictures you don't wish to remain a user on the site I can remove you at your request. Does this sound OK? I'll do it.. I have only worked at genealogy since I retired in 1997, have kicked myself many times for not having the sense to have talked extensively with my Dad about many things I am sure he could have told me. I am not a true genealogist since I have a lot to learn. Right now I'm sort of in limbo with it.. Stumped at the identity of my GGGrandparents. If you look at the site you posted on you can see one I placed on about John & Elizabeth (Roberson) Yates. It is John's parents that have me stumped..I think I have it narrowed down to one of two..but can't verify. Once I could verify I can then connect a whole passel of yates's in Crawford county Indiana. We are having some stones re-set in Grantsburg and Union (Yates) Chapel. Figure once I'm gone no one will ever do it. If you go on the family site you can read a couple of stories I wrote from my research and family stories handed down about my ancestors. I hope you find them interesting. Just go all over the site and click on everything..you can't hurt anything.. I'll go now..I will answer more questions later and possibly put you in touch with more of the family. There are not a whole lot of them on email but a few..and they are younger than me of course.. later, jim n ruth yates.

June 27, 2001 To: warnech@msn.com Subject: RE: Harry Elmer Yates I sent you a reply and it came back..the only difference I could see was that your message had added "email" in the address before msn.com. You can probably help me with the Laswell line considerably. I don't have any of Jesse's ancestors listed. John Laswells' wife has a book of Laswell info that she brought out one day when we visited her. I sent the site invitation but then after your message came back I went back on and changed the email address and re-invited you..you might get a couple of invitations.. Go down on the main page to "John Yates descendants and click on it..that's where I have the genealogy posted. I can send you a GEDCOM later if you want it.. I am using Family Tree maker version 8 currently in case you can open that... later, jim n ruthie

27 Jun 2001 From: Carlene Warner To: Jim and Ruth Yates Jim, Thanks so much! I posted a message on the site--after spending several hours going through the photos and news. This has been thrilling for me and I am so grateful that you responded so quickly. Of course I'm 3 hours late in going to bed now! I use Family Tree Maker 8.0 so if you send me a GEDCOM I'll have no trouble with it. My cousin gave me an old photo album that had belonged to my grandmother, and there was a photo labeled Lucille Yates, 1914. I am sending this photo for you to see. If you have trouble opening it, let me know and I'll send it in a different format. By the way, we're of the same generation. I am 59. Much of the earlier Laswell info that I have came from the people you've mentioned, but they did not have much on Jesse Laswell's immediate family.
I've gathered quite a bit on them and will share that with you. I'm still looking for Jesse's mother's death certificate and grave site and I've tried everything. She supposedly died in Crawford County, IN in 1905 and supposedly buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Terre Haute, IN but the state of IN does not have a death record and the Cemetery's records from 1905 are not available. I would like to get a stone for her as I doubt she has one, but I've not been able to verify anything on her death and burial. One of the reasons I was looking for Jesse's descendants was that I thought as Jesse was the oldest she may have told someone where her mother was buried. I've written for IN state death records, Crawford, Clay and Vigo County death records to no avail. Any help any relatives could give would be much appreciated. I must go to bed. I have to get up in 5 hours and go to work! Best Regards, Carlene

June 29, 2001 To: warnech@msn.com Carlene: Did you recover from your late night perusing of the website? Sorry if it "did you in" . I am curious as to whether you want a Tree maker file sent to you or not. If so, what would you want included? I can give you from my GGfather John Yates on thru 4 generations which would include Dad & Jesse's children..or even 5 gens which would include our children too and six would include our grandchildren. I won't guarantee it to be 100% accurate but I do try to give attention to detail as much as I am able. Of course, I don't have any Laswell info in it which I am looking forward to changing by your help. Are you aware of the methods to use so you can generate just the file you want to send without sending ALL your file? If you are not I have written up a little guide to help accomplish that..will forward that to you if you need it. Hope all is well at your place... later, jim n ruthie.

7/5/2001; Hi, Jim, Just picked up my email this morning after my trip. I live in Goodyear, AZ, about 20 miles west of Phoenix. My mother's maiden name was Barbee--my grandmother, Alma Ruth Laswell, Jesse Leah's sister, married Alonzo Barbee in Terre Haute. The Barbee family had lived there since the 1890s. The Laswells were from Crawford County. My sister and I went to Terre Haute in May. We drove down I-70 from Indianapolis, but since I am directionally challenged, I don't know which way NE would be from our route. What town do you live in? I will get the FTM file to you very soon--I have to figure out how to separate the Laswell info out so I have to read my manual first. I may try to send the Lucille Yates photo again--but after that last fiasco, I'm a little reluctant to try. Regards, Carlene

July 05, 2001 To: Carlene Warner Subject: RE: Harry Elmer Yates I don't think you responded to this message..? jim thanks
for the reply...see some responses below in CAPITAL LETTERS: At 09:42 PM 6/29/2001 -0700, you wrote: Hi, Jim, Would love to get the six generations. Do you also have photos and notes in FTM? I ONLY HAVE A FEW PHOTOS AND I GUESS YOU'D SAY JUST A FEW NOTES. THAT IS SOMETHING I NEED TO BE ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN DOING SINCE I HAVE SEVERAL THAT WOULD BE APPROPRIATE FOR THE RECORDS. I'll take whatever you deem appropriate. I do not put any of the info I gather onto the public sites, and will honor any restrictions you set on using the info. I HAVE NOT PLACED ANY OF MY INFO ON THE PUBLIC SITES YET EITHER AND HAVE ALWAYS ASKED OTHERS NOT TO, BUT THE MORE I'M INTO THIS THE MORE I REALIZE WHAT A HELP IT WOULD BE TO ME ALSO SOMETIMES IF OTHERS PLACED THEIR INFO ON SOME OF THE SITES..I DON'T WANT TO BE SELFISH WITH WHAT I'VE DUG UP..IF I CAN EVER MAKE MY CONNECTION TO MY 2G GRANDPARENTS I MIGHT BE TEMPTED TO PLACE SOME ON...JUST NOT YET I GUESS. I started my genealogy research in order to provide my only grandchild (now 16) with a record of his ancestors. I figured he would someday be interested, and since he's more than likely my one and only, it seemed even more important to do. A WONDERFUL THING TO DO FOR HIM..HE MAY NOT REALIZE FOR YEARS THAT HE REALLY WANTS TO KNOW AND THEN HE'LL HAVE IT..IF YOU CAN ONLY GET HIM TO UNDERSTAND THAT EVENTUALLY HE'LL NEED TO PICK UP THE TORCH.. I've thoroughly enjoyed doing the research, and when I solve another mystery it really gives me a thrill! YES! I'm just sorry that I never knew my mother's side of the family and am only discovering their existence long after they are gone.
It was very moving for me to see on the Yates family web site my mother's aunt, first cousins, etc. WHAT SITE ARE YOU SPEAKING OF HERE? NOT THE ONE I INVITED YOU TO? IS THERE ONE I NEED TO VISIT? I recently went to Terre Haute, Indiana, to do family research at the Vigo County Public Library, and visited my grandparents' graves. It was my first visit to the town my mother was born in. TERRE HAUTE IS ONLY 35 MILES NORTHEAST ON I-70 AND I'VE BEEN TO THE VIGO CO LIBRARY A FEW TIMES. WHAT WERE YOUR PARENTS NAMES? I GUESS I'LL FIND OUT WHEN I SEE SOME OF YOUR INFO.. How much Laswell info would you like? I have a lot that others have given to me, plus a lot I've gathered on my own. I also have a lot of Clingman info (Jesse Leah's mother's family.) Let me know how much you want. WHATEVER YOU WISH TO SHARE.. I am on my way to Seattle for a long weekend to visit a friend I haven't seen for 24 years. IF IT'S NOT TOO NOSEY..WHERE DO YOU LIVE? RUTHIE HAD A COUSIN LIVING SOUTH OF SEATTLE NEAR CHEHALAS..HE PASSED AWAY THIS LAST YEAR BUT HIS WIFE STILL LIVES THERE. If you let me know what you would like to have, I'll try to get it out before I go. THERE'S NO RUSH..JUST WAIT 'TILL YOU'RE BACK. HAVE A GREAT TIME ON YOUR MINI VACATION.. LATER, JIM N RUTHIE

5 Jul 2001 From: Jim and Ruth Yates To: Carlene Warner; Carlene: Here is an FTM file of 6 generations down from my GGpa John Yates. I will appreciate it if you will keep it from being published on any public sites..there are scads of living people in this file. Since you are using tree maker v-8.0 I just sent you a Tree maker file instead of GEDCOM..if this is not OK let me know. Enjoy! jim n ruthie
5 Jul 2001 Carlene: thanks for the note.. you went right past our town on the way to Terre H. WE are just 35 miles west of TH on I-70. I have Adobe Photo deluxe.. Also, I'll send you an instruction sheet I made up on how to copy and export individuals from your tree maker. If you have any questions just write me.. later, jim n ruthie
7/7/2001 Jim, Success at last! Here is the other one. Let me know if you recognize them from your childhood. Carlene

8 Jul 2001 To: Carlene Warner: The photo. Marjorie and Virgil Oh yes, definitely that is Marg and Virgil! I don't think I have that photo..I'll look for what I do have though. I remember Virgil was a taxi driver in Terre Haute, the town you came to for research. Also, Marge's second husband, Bill Ijams, was a Terre Haute native. I have no contact or genealogy records of either of her husbands. Marge lived there most of her life...then she and Bill built a home on Paint Mill Lake about 7 miles south of TH...then they began wintering in St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands..Finally cancer and other physical problems took her and she is buried in the big cemetery on TH east side (Highland Lawn)..I can go right to her grave. I sort of hate her being buried there since she has no family near her..she is buried in the Ijams family plot. Bill has told me he plans to be cremated so even he won't be there..I guess it's all in a person's mind after all. Bill married again after Marge died and that wife died also, was cremated..He lives now in Pompano Beach, FL or Ft Lauderdale. We are going down there (Pompano Beach) in Sept and I might look him up if he is still alive. He will be 84 by then. DOB is 9-4-1917. Does the picture say whether it is their wedding day or not? I know you gave me the wedding date and I didn't have it.. thanks. Well, whatever you changed worked..we were getting nowhere except frustrated with the first tries... thanks so much. Please share any others you think I might be interested in also. thanks.. jim n ruthie

July 10, 2001 5:56 PM To: Carlene Warner Subject: Re: The Print Shop Photo Pro digital photo. Were you able to open the Yates file I sent you? I was curious as to what you thought of it? thanks, jim n ruthie
7/9/2001 Jim, This is a photo from my grandmother's album labeled "Aunt Genevieve." Since there are no Genevieve's in all my research, I wondered if you might recognize it. I don't think it is Ruth Wallace, but I want to make sure. Thanks, Carlene
11 Jul 2001 To: Jim and Ruth Yates Jim, Yes, I opened it without incident and found it very interesting. I've not yet had the opportunity to merge the info into my main FTM file, but plan to do it this weekend. I usually only put the deceased individuals into my main file and then their living descendants into other separate lines and files. That way, I can concentrate on ancestors. I've had a heavy duty work project that has taken a lot of my home computer time, so I'm getting a little behind in my genealogy projects. I also plan to try once again to send you the Laswell info this weekend. No luck the first few times trying to separate out that line. Rather than read the manual, I'll normally try everything else first until I'm totally frustrated--then I go to where I should have started. Your instruction sheet was helpful, but I need spend the time to get it right. The only other time I tried to do it--when my file only had 201 names--I lost the total file and had to build it back from scratch. Since then, I back up on CD's because the file is now too big for me to ever replace.
I love doing the notes section, so I have an abundance of info on those I've been able to research. Also, I've loaded the scrapbook sections with photos that I acquire. It's a big file! Usually I'll get just vitals from someone else and it gives me enough clues to be able to get further info from various sources on my own. That way, I feel more confident that the info is accurate. Until a year ago I didn't even know my grandmother had a sister named Jesse Leah Laswell. Once I found that out, I was able to get her death certificate, which gave me even more clues. And now, I know you! I have hired a research firm out of Salt Lake City to research three other family lines that were impossible for me find info on. It is not cheap! They had marvelous luck on my father's mother's paternal line in Switzerland, and provided documentation back to 1536. The other two have not been as productive. At least it makes me feel better that I wasn't just knowledgeable enough to find info. So far, the Laswell line has been the easiest for me and has been fairly well researched by various Laswell/Curl descendent's. Regards, Carlene
August 05, 2001 Hi Carlene: Hope this finds you OK... I was wondering if you have figured out yet how to use my instructions and create the Laswell file I was hoping to receive from you? Is there anything I can do to assist? If you have been too busy I understand. I have contacted another branch of my yates family, the Canedy's. I am hoping to share info with them also. They are from the Thomas Jefferson Yates line..he was brother to my Grandpa James Wilson Yates. thanks for listening... later, jim n ruthie

7 Aug 2001 To: Carlene Warner See some responses below in CAPITAL LETTERS:
Hi, Jim, Well, I've finally figured out how to make a file with the Laswell ancestors, but I still can't figure out how to exclude the notes. I have pages of notes on various individuals, some of it very personal (about my grandparents, etc.) that I would like to leave off. Do you know how to do that? NO I DON'T. WILL THEY SHOW IF YOU MAKE IT A GEDCOM FILE? I keep thinking I've set the file up by including the right info, but when I open it, it contains all the info from the original file on each individual included. If you can help me out on that, I'll get it right to you. Otherwise I can print out a genealogy report and send it snail mail, but I'm sure you'd rather just have an FTM file. IF THAT'S THE ONLY WAY I CAN GET IT THEN I'D RATHER HAVE IT THAT WAY THAN NOT AT ALL.. After 8 months I finally received the packet from the National Archives that contained the Civil War pension records for David Morton Laswell, Jessie's grandfather. It seems every time I get discouraged with lack of progress, something re-sparks my enthusiasm. Where did you find the Canedy's? FIRST I SAW A VIOLET (YATES) CANEDY MENTIONED WHO HAD SUBMITTED SOME INFO IN THINGS ANOTHER FRIEND RESEARCHING ROBERSONS AND YATES'S AND SAW THAT SHE WAS LISTED AS FROM MT CARMEL, IL...I HAVE ANOTHER DISTANT RELATIVE IN MT CARMEL THAT DOES SOME GENEALOGY SO I WROTE AND ASKED HER IF SHE KNEW OF HER..SHE DID AND CAME UP WITH HER SONS NAMES AND A CONTACT TO ONE OF THEM. NOW I AM COMMUNICATING DIRECTLY WITH THEM BUT IT IS SLOW. THEY ARE DESCENDANTS FROM THOMAS JEFFERSON YATES, A BROTHER TO MY GRANDFATHER JAMES WILSON YATES. LATER, JIM

7 Aug 2001 To: Jim and Ruth Yates Jim, I think I've got it! As you suggested, I saved it to a GEDCOM file and suppressed the notes. Here it is. If you are interested in my extensive notes on really early ancestors, I can make another GEDCOM file and leave off my grandparents and include notes on the those before them. This file is just the direct Laswell line. Sorry for being such a luddite regarding this whole process. As I mentioned in an earlier email, I set my FTW file up without thought of sharing it publicly, so I included a lot of notes to myself on research, what to look for next, personal thoughts on facts I had found and personal info regarding relatives. On most of the earlier ancestors I have cleaned up the notes because I am done with them, but it was the later ones that I had not cleaned up. Now that I've figured the whole thing out--let me know what else you would like. Cheers, Carlene

August 08, 2001 Carlene: I will look it over thoroughly and we'll talk more later. I can see already you are much more thorough than I am in your research. I appreciate it much. Do you mind if I share the file with those of Jesse's descendants that I communicate with? I am sure what I sent you will help you with Jesse's downline won't it? So far I am still at the proverbial brick wall with my Yates research. I will be glad to receive anything else you would care to send me. Hot here today! more later, jim n ruthie
8/8/2001, you wrote: Jim, Please feel free to share. If any one those descendants have photos or info on Jesse, I would much appreciate their sharing with me. Thanks, Carlene
8 Aug 2001 To: Carlene Warner OK, thanks. No, I don't know of any of them who have info at all..seems like what they know I've told them..which wasn't much! How many pictures of Jesse have you seen of mine? I think about all I have are on the website. If I find others I will share with you. thanks, jim n ruthie
September 04, 2001 Carlene: I can also remember my sister Marjorie always having a communication with who I think was her cousin and she called her Alberta. I think it must have been on the Laswell side but I can't find such a name in your file. have you heard of her? jim

4 Sep 2001 Jim, Alberta Harris was the daughter of Elsie May Laswell Harris and Otto Harris. Elsie was the daughter of Peter Edward Laswell, brother of David Sherman Laswell. She married Bill Charters. She was born 20 Jan 1917, d. July 1989. Patrick Hoctor told me she had been the one who had always kept in contact with the whole family. I have a photo from my grandmother's album that names an Alberta, and from what Patrick Hoctor told me, I believe the woman in the photo is Alberta Charters. I will send it to you, and a photo of Alma Ruth Laswell, Katie Laswell, and Olive Laswell-Jesse's sisters, probably taken in the early sixties. The way I found out about Alberta was when I was in Terre Haute strolling around the Grandview Cemetery, by accident I ran into Peter Edward Laswell's grave, and the Harris' were buried there also. I had no idea who they were, so I sent off for their obits. Soon found out Elsie Harris was Peter's daughter. Her obit named a daughter, Alberta Charters-so it all came together! I'll get those photos sent as soon as I have dinner. Carlene

September 03, 2001 Carlene: When I was a boy, I remember 2 ladies my dad both called "Aunt". One was a lady he called "Aunt Zadie" and she was married to Harry Seaton. The other was a lady he called Aunt Katie and she was married to Bert Cox. In looking through your Laswell file I tried to see if they might have been Laswells. I believe I may have found them. The one he called Aunt Zadie might be the daughter of David Morton Laswell for I see one named Elzada Jane Laswell b. 7/3/1878, d. 1/2/1961 and buried in Mt Pleasant cemetery in Terre Haute, In. They lived in Terre Haute. The one he called Aunt Katie might have been the daughter of David Sherman Laswell named Elizabeth Catherine Laswell b. 3/30/1892, d. 10/30/1969 and buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Riley, In. They lived at rural Riley as I remember. I just wondered if you knew anything of this? I think they both had children and may have descendants in the Terre Haute area. I remember Aunt Katie talking about one of her boys and he had an unusual name, Beverage Cox. thanks for listening.. We are leaving Thurs the 6th for 2 weeks vacation. Just got home Sat from 8 days in TN. later, jim n ruthie

9/3/2001 Hi, Jim, You've figured it out pretty well. Elzada was called Zadie. Elizabeth Catherine was called Katie. Katie was my grandmother's sister and Jesse was their sister, so I'm not sure why your dad would have called her "aunt" as they were pretty close in age. Mariah Catherine Curl Laswell, David Morton Laswell's wife, was also called Kate or Katie. She would have been Jesse's grandmother. I've attached information I received about 10 months ago from Warren Cox Jr. (Wally). He was going to give me some addresses, but had some personal problems (divorce) and couldn't get at the info. He told me he was finally going to get a chance to get it-then I never heard from him again. I've written emails twice, with no further response. When I was 5 years old, we went to Terre Haute for a visit and I remember the daughters of Katie Cox' daughter, Emma Cox Turner. Wally said Emma Turner has severe Alzheimer's disease but thinks she is still alive. He didn't know where her daughter Mary Catherine lived-except Indiana. Her last name is Crouse and she would be about 69 now. Another daughter, Dorothy White, also supposedly lives in Indiana, but with such a common name, I doubt she could be located without more info. The other two daughters have died.
Recently I talked to a fellow in Terre Haute (Patrick Hoctor) who is the grandson of Edna Olive Laswell Schlichter, (Jesse's sister) and he really helped me piece some loose ends together about Olive's family-even though he couldn't remember dates. I wanted to get the date of Olive's death so I could get her obit and he couldn't remember, but said he had the info stored somewhere. I emailed him some photos and asked him to identify them and he said he would, but I've never heard back from him. He also gave me the name of an older man (Richard Seaton) in Terre Haute who is related to the Seaton's who may have Laswell info. I've not yet called him. If you find out any further info, please let me know. Regards, Carlene
(Here is Elizabeth Catherine Laswell's family line.)

13 Oct 2001 Carlene: We just arrived home from Alexandria & DC ...got to see Ron Yates while there..in fact he took us on 2 different sight seeing tours of DC. He is delightful! I had not seen him since my Father's funeral in 1969. He is one of Jesse's grandchildren. He told me he had opened some communication with you for which I was happy. Hope all is well with you and yours. later, jim n ruthie Carlene: you've opened up some more memory channels..I also remembered hearing Katie talk about "Ivy", their son..and in my young mind I thought why did they name those guys such funny names! Well, I think possibly the reason Dad called her Aunt Katie was because in the presence of the children they would instruct them to call her Aunt..don't you suppose? It's all I can think of. Wow, I can see there would be million leads to chase here if we wanted to track down the living descendants! thanks for the comeback... later, jim n ruthie

13 Oct 2001 From: Jim and Ruth Yates To: Carlene Warner Ron: Some of these folk are your ancestors! let's hope Carlene can help us with some more of the names.. Fred helped me with the ones I have currently but he didn't know a lot of them.. Carlene: I thought you might know a bunch of these folks..there are several Laswells, ect, and I thought you might be able to help me with identification of some of them. If you can bring it up well enough to see that I have numbered some individuals up to 15 and I can send you those names but I don't know the rest of them. Here are the names I know. thanks, jim 1. Harry E. Yates (my dad) 2. Albert Cox 3. Harry Seaton 4. Ernie Schlichter 5. Tom ? 6. Jim Yates (me) 7. ....Laswell ? 8. Dink (Martin) Laswell 9. Jean Hoctor 10. Alberta 11. Marjorie Yates 12. Georgia Yates (my mom) 13. Zadie Seaton (she was a Laswell) 14. Ivy Cox 15. Merle Hoctor

13 Oct 2001 Jim, What a shock! I am in that photo! This had to be taken in 1947/48 when my dad, mom, sister and I traveled to Indiana. It was the only time I was there until this past May. I was able to identify quite a few of them--of course, my immediate family and then others from other photos I've collected. Where did you get this? My dad isn't in the photo, so I wouldn't be surprised if he was the one taking the picture. I wish I knew who the last man standing in the middle row, right, with the dark shirt is. He is in several photos in my grandmother's small album. He has the same features as the two other Laswell men. He can't be Sherman Laswell, as he died in 1940. Well, I guess we have met after all! Thanks so much for sharing. I've numbered and labeled so you can put the info on the one you are working with. Carlene

14 Oct 2001 Carlene: How happy we are you were able to appreciate the picture. It was in my Mom & Dad's photos. It was done by a photographer they apparently hired to come that day..on the back of the Pic it says "Sebree's Studio, 629 Wabash Ave, Terre Haute, IN. I'm guessing this might have been done in Deming Park on the East side of TH. That was a favorite place for family reunions to take place then. I will go over what you sent me later and see if I can get it all together..this may need to go on the family site. Your attachment came in very large..I have to scroll back and forth to read it. That's OK though, I can do it. Better than too small. As to meeting you then..I doubt it..about then in my life if I saw a girl coming toward me I ran the other way! Was this the last of the Laswell reunions? I'm sure not probably. I need to take this picture to Crawford County with me and drop by John Laswell's house to see if his widow can identify some of them also. thanks for the reply and the identities..more later, jim n ruthie

October 16, 2001 Hi, Ron, Attached is a lengthy document containing some of research I've done on Laswell family ancestors. You'll notice I don't have some birth and death dates as I've not found the info in some cases, but in the year since I started doing genealogy research, I've compiled a lot of data. I try to verify everything with actual records, etc. It is an expensive, time consuming process, but I really have enjoyed the hunt. Every time I solve another mystery or find a missing link, I feel like Perry Mason! If you can add any info, please let me know. Up until I started my research, I didn't even know my grandmother had a sister named Jessie Leah. I found out by going through some old papers my grandmother sent to my sister 30 years ago. One was a list of birth dates of her siblings and parents, and I used that info as my starting point. My cousin told me that Grandmother once said since her mother died when she was 5 years old, that her sister Katie, who was about 11 at that time, raised her and her younger sister Olive. She said Jessie Leah was 13 years old at the time of her mother's death, so she took over the cooking, etc. From what I've gathered, it appears the earlier Laswell's were quite poor. It also seems that once Jessie and Harry got married, her life became easier (I don't know what your grandfather did for a living but he obviously was better off than Jessie's father.)
I've also sent a photo in a second email taken in June when my cousins came to visit. All the people in the photo are your second cousins. L. to R. on the floor: Margaruite Rains (my sister and daughter of Helen Barbee Hegi and Carl Hegi. Helen was the daughter of Alma Ruth Laswell Barbee.) Jim Barbee, son of Harold Barbee, son of Alma Ruth Laswell Barbee: Sitting in middle, L. to R. Carlene Warner (me) daughter of Helen; Jo Lynn Nagel, daughter of Harold Barbee; Standing, Carlton Hegi, (my brother) son of Helen. I have another brother, as does Jim and Jo Lynn. What caused your father's death? From the obit, it seems like it was sudden--like a heart attack. Do you know? I know from my research several of the Laswell's died suddenly, at fairly young ages. Let me know what you think about the info in the attached file. Regards, Carlene

10/17/2001 Hey this is interesting! Don't know if you have a sense of the geography but the areas that are mentioned in the very early years is the location of where we live now in general. Even Beaver Dam Bridge is still on the map! I was jazzed about the idea of Jean and I taking a nice weekend drive and going out to see some of the locations. Thank you for sending me this information. You have done an outstanding job and in volume! Best regards. REY

17 Oct 2001 Carlene: Ron copies me on some of the communication but what you see below is all he sent so I wasn't sure what he was talking about with the geography, ect. However, I see he didn't answer some of your questions..like what my Dad did for a living...he was a blacksmith and had 2 different shops in Chrisman, IL those days. I am not sure he was always a blacksmith in those early days but I am pretty sure he learned the trade from his Grandpa Greenberry Ott who had a shop in Leavenworth, In. as dad was growing up. Dad eventually spent a lot of years as a farm implement salesman for both John Deere and International. After he retired he went back into the blacksmith shop in farming seasons and sharpened plow shares for extra money. At 70 years of age he could still handle a plow share with a pair of tongs in his left hand (he was right handed) and take it in and out of the forge, to the anvil, & to the trip hammer. As I have grown older I appreciated that more and more the fact that he could do that with his one left arm..while I really doubt I could even pick one up with my left arm let alone extend it out over an anvil, ect, and hammer it moving it along as needed! Oh well...memories of a good dad..not just because he was strong physically but because he was strong in character and honesty.
Also, Ron's dad Carl had contracted rheumatic fever as a youngster, probably from untreated strep, and it left him with heart problems, valves, ect. He was always very active though..played basketball in High School (he was 6"-6-1/2" tall), worked hard, married and started a family. One morning on his construction job up on a roof in the Highland, In, area, he died of a heart attack. Ron has a lot of his Dad's features and as I remember walks nearly identical to his dad! I couldn't help but notice that as we were with him those 2 days in Washington and Alexandria. His wife Jean is a delightful person also. I hope you don't mind my "butting in" but thought you might like the info.. later, jim n ruthie

October 20, 2001 Carlene; somehow I have misplaced the filing of the Laswell notes you sent Ron..would it be too much trouble to send those again? thanks, jim
22 Oct 2001 Hi, Jim, Just returned from Denver. I've attached the previously sent Laswell notes. They are long! Carlene
10/27/2001, you wrote: Jim, Hope you share the newly identified Laswell family reunion attendees. Thanks for the info. Carlene

27 Oct 2001 Yes indeed Carlene..I knew if you got this and read it you'd be "rattling my chain"! No intention to keep you waiting but I had to leave right then for a trip to Terre Haute, then back by Marshall to visit Ruthie's ailing sister..now, this may take a little time and interpretation but I have quite a lot to tell you so fasten your seat belt! You'll need to drag out your picture too and here we go! ..first of all, the lady whom we visited with, Mayme Ruth Laswell is the widow of John D. Laswell, son of Martin (Dink) Laswell. She gave me a photo of she and her children taken this past Aug and as soon as I get my scanner going again I'll send it to you. I looked in your file and didn't see any of Dink's family, do you have it? Her address is: 3240 E. Curby Rd. English, In., 47118 ..She tells me that all of Dink and Gertie's family are gone now except one daughter who lives in FL. Here's her address & phone: Kathryn Chanley 10152 Rachel Cherie Dr. Polk City, FL., 33868 ph 813-984-4277 Some of these ID's are positive and others "she is almost sure".
first of all..the one you wondered about, the man in dark clothing at the right end with Laswell features is Hurrell Edward Laswell, son of Dink and Gertie and I have numbered him #27. He was probably Dink's transportation to the reunion and I don't see Gertie in the group. ..man in white shirt sitting at far right in front is Burt Laswell ..I don't remember for sure but he looks enough like Hurley (Aunt Gertie called him) to be his son. I gave him #28. ..Lady in Dad & Dink's row who is #12 from the left wearing the dark dress is Kathleen (Lankford) Laswell, Hurrell's wife and I gave her #29. ..Man in top row 4th from RIGHT TO LEFT "she thinks" is Delbert Laswell..I didn't catch the line of relationship. I gave him #30. ..the lady holding the baby just to the right of Aunt Zadie, #13, she thinks is Alma, Alberta's sister, & I imagine the baby is hers. Would this be Alma? I gave her #31. ..the guy just to the right of your Mom & Sister is a Seaton she thinks and if you look at Harry Seaton, #3, he looks a lot like him. Since he is leaning on the arm of the lady in front of him I imagine it's his wife. He is #32. This is all I found out..I think if she had awhile to look at the pic she might come up with more.. She looked hard at some of them and said she knew them, they looked familiar, but she couldn't come up with the name. Hope this helps... later, jim n ruthie

27 Oct 2001 Jim, a friend of mine has the 1880 census CD's and she sent me a list of all the Yates' in Indiana for that year. I've attached it for your use in case you haven't seen it. Carlene

10/27/2001 Jim, Thanks!! Delbert Laswell was the son of Peter Edward Laswell, #7 in the photo. Delbert was born in 1894, which would have made him 53 at the time of the photo. The man in top row 4th from R. looks younger, but maybe it's Delbert. His sister was Elsie May Laswell and I'd bet she's in this photo somewhere as she is the mother of Alberta and Alma. (Her husband was Otto Harris, and he's probably also in the photo. (I agree with the assessment about Alma, she and Alberta look like twins.)Alma married someone named Rankins, so he may also be in the photo. Harry Seaton's sons were Kermit and Howard Seaton. Kermit had a son named Richard Seaton, and he is listed in the Terre Haute phone book. He would be 81 now. Patrick Hoctor told me Richard knows a lot about the Laswells, but I have not called him yet. I guess if I'm going to, I'd better do it soon. Sometimes when we wait with people that age, it's too late. I looked in FTM and have Dink's family listed. I may have done further posting after I sent you the FTM file, but they are all listed in the Notes I recently sent. We may identify all these people yet! Carlene

28 Oct 2001 Carlene..I'll try to digest this info soon. As to the family of Dink, you didn't have the generations to send set too low did you? I'm still up trying to follow a guy's instructions over email as to how to fix my computer so it will drive my scanner..has always been a problem and we think it is the USB drives. I'm not so good at all the abbreviations, procedures, ect..but maybe we'll get there.. thanks, jim n ruthie PS..you'd better contact the 81 yr old soon!
30 Oct 2001 To: Carlene Warner Here is the picture Mayme Ruth Laswell gave me to copy. Left to Right front: Faye Trambaugh, Mayme Ruth Laswell, Ellen Wright, Nancy Ross, & Lou Ann Timberlake Back, L to R: Gerrell Laswell, Molly Whooley, & David Laswell.

5 Nov 2001 Jim, I finally spoke to Richard Seaton (the 81 year old I mentioned is actually 71) and he has the photo we've been working on. The attached file gives the names that he has listed, so the best bet is to start over with the numbering system and begin at the top row left to right with the first person (Harry Seaton as #1.) There are only a few blanks left now. He had several families listed that I don't have a clue about--Hall's, Jewell's Daye's. I doubt they could be Laswell relatives, perhaps in-laws or family friends--but none of those names show up in my genealogy research. However, Gladys Daye's photo is in my grandmother's album. Some of the names I gave you are inaccurate--according to his info; for instance, Mabel Salem and Lulu Clark reversed. Since he had a list of names with the photo, I would count on his info being more accurate. Let me know if any of the new names ring a bell. Carlene

6 Nov 2001 Carlene: Way to go! Sure glad you got to communicate with him and he sure helped us a lot didn't he? Is he living in Terre Haute? If so I would like to communicate with him a little. Also, how did you say he was related to Harry and Zadie? Grandson? Apparently he nailed the date down to 1947 for sure? thanks again for this..Guess I stirred up quite a bit here didn't I? thanks for carrying it further. I am still searching for someone who might have a listing of the "Turley" cemetery in Crawford Co. east of Temple. My cousin Wilbur has some family buried in a cemetery there and we think this might be the one. Wilbur went to Alamogordo, NM last week to spend the winter there with his sister and family.. later, jim n ruthie

11/6/2001 Jim, Yes, he explained he lived in Prairie Creek, which I understand is out in the country, but his address is Terre Haute. He was very friendly and helpful. (#812-898-2672) He is Harry and Zadie's grandson, and the son of Kernit Seaton and Katie Puckett. He remembered quite a few of the Laswell's and said he remembered John and Mamie Laswell very well. He was born after Jesse Leah died, so of course he knows nothing about her. He didn't say for sure the photo was taken in 1947, but agreed with me it probably was around that time. The reason I believe it was 1947 is because I had not yet started school when we went to Indiana, and I remember that my brother had been born and was always asleep on that seemingly long trip. He was born in January 1947. If I could just get the birth date of the youngest baby in the photo the date could be pinned down to the year for sure, but unfortunately, there is no last name for Nadine, her husband or name for the baby she's holding. Peter Edward Laswell had a daughter named Nadine, born in 1900. The girl in the photo appears to be younger than 27. Also, Mabel Barbee Salem had a daughter, Nadine, age unknown. So, since Mabel and Peter were both at the reunion, it probably would be anyone's guess as to which Nadine appears. I'm sure that someday it will all come together! Thanks again for sharing the photo. Yes, you did stir up quite a bit and I'm glad for it! Hope to meet you someday in person. Carlene

7 Nov 2001 Carlene: Thanks much for this info.. Greatly appreciated. Haven't had time yet to digest it all but I will. later, jim n ruthie
8 Dec 2001 Carlene: I found a picture of them that my brother Fred had told me who they were before he died. I have Ernie, Billie, Olive, & Gene written on the back with Gene marked as "front"..so it must be Jean? I thought you might like this.. What relation was Olive to Jesse? Hope all is well.. jim n ruthie
9 Dec 2001 Jim, Thanks! I've downloaded the photo into FTM. Always glad to get anything to build my genealogy research. Olive was Jesse's sister. Ron Yates would be Olive's great nephew. I've seen Jean spelled Gene and Jean, but Jean's son, Patrick Hoctor, told me when I called him months ago her name was Jean. By the way, I sent the attached photo to Mayme Laswell at the address you provided. I'd hoped she could identify some people that I believe are three Laswell brothers and Zadie Seaton. I included a SASE. She has not responded. I've attached it for you to look at--perhaps you may remember them. Carlene
9 Dec 2001 Carlene: The pic you sent looks to me like the brother on the right HAS to be Peter Edward Laswell (like the group picture I sent you)..the one in front looks a lot like "Uncle" Dink, and could the one on the left be Harry Seaton? jim
January 18, 2002 To: warnech@email.msn.com Subject: Here is a link that will take you to the cemetery index you were needing. Marti sent it to me.. let me know if it doesn't work since I am forwarding it to you.. jim here is where you will find the cemetery listing for the tick ridge church. Hope this helps in your research. Crawford County Indiana marti
1/19/2002 Jim, Thanks for the address. I was surprised Marti got it done so fast. There are 22 Laswell relatives (and some spouses) that I've now been able to name their burial place. I'm sure the others are probably relatives, but do not know the connection. This is been a very fruitful contact! Thanks for guiding me to her. Carlene

January 19, 2002 You are welcome.. I was a little amazed to see the one where the comment was "hanged in jail"! did you see that? Don't know if he committed suicide or they hung him! I also looked at the Temple cemetery index she has on there..my cousin Wilbur's Grandparents on his Mom's side are buried there and her info is not good..wrong spellings, ect. I'm in the process of trying to get correct info on that and let her know. Glad the contact worked out for you..sometimes they do..sometimes they don't! Most of the time for me they don't! I thought I had struck a gold mine with some of my Yates distants..when I talked on the phone with them the lady was naming the old names from her records..seemed excited..then as I tried to follow up with email and more calls they just seemed to turn cold on me..said a brother had been given all their info and had it on their family site..I was already invited to the site but he didn't have as much info as I had.. later, jim n ruthie PS. I never did know for sure WHERE this Tick cemetery is located..did she tell you? jim

1/19/2002 Jim, Marti said it was an active cemetery and she had friends buried there, so I guess she must know where it is. She said the church it is connected with is called Tick Ridge Church, but I couldn't find any listing for it on Yahoo. I was thinking about writing her back and asking for a more accurate location (the cemetery is supposedly in Eckerty) because I wanted to get a stone for my great grandmother. Marti said there is a monument place in Marengo--so I assume the church and cemetery must be in that general area. Yes--I noticed the hanging, and it was a guy who was only 22. I'd like to go through the newspaper archives for that area--I bet there are plenty of Laswell stories to peruse. Carlene

January 20, 2002 Hi..I'm thinking Eckerty and Marengo are about 15 miles apart.. However, the guy at Marengo is about the only Monument service in that whole area. He is the one who is undertaking our monument repairs. Cousin Wilbur and I are having several re-set and repaired in Crawford Co. He promised last spring to have it all completed by June but never got to it all. I think he gives priority to new stones..which is probably his bread and butter. I was disappointed but just have to hope he completes it this spring. He is very personable and nice to deal with..just has his plate too full..like lots of folks.. here is his name and phone: Mark Hollen, Marengo Monument, 812-365-2463. His mother spends a lot of time answering the phone at the shop for him. I have a genealogy contact whose maiden name was Wright. She is quite good and lives in Paoli, In. She also has Yates ancestors and has been a great help to me. She also has an old map of the cemeteries in Crawford Co. If you think she would be of help in any way or be interested in your Wright info I would put you in contact with her..in fact, here's here email address in case you are interested..no pressure..her name is Sharon Newlin: newlins@n.pop.kiva.net Gotta get ready for church! thanks for the communication..jim n ruthie

1/20/2002 Jim, Thanks for the monument info and email address. I wrote to Sharon regarding the cemetery map and also attached the Wright file. Hopefully she'll be able to send me the map. I was hoping to get the stone ordered and set by summer. Now I'm wondering if that is unrealistic. Anyway, thanks again. Carlene
20 Jan 2002 Carlene: I imagine you can get stone set by summer. He gives priority to new stones I am sure. The repair and re-setting takes a back seat to new work I think. As to the map..I rather doubt she can send it to you..she described it to me as large, old, and rather fragile. I don't know how she got it. Anyhow, she can tell you the possibilities. Sharon is a quality person..no nonsense, and a very good genealogist. I hope you and she hit it off. later, jim n ruthie
January 21, 2002 To: Carlene Warner Did Sharon reply? Jim

1/21/2002 Jim, Yes. She's been very helpful. She may go to English and try to find out something as to newspaper records regarding my ggrandmother's death. She is very familiar with the area, and this is what she said about the cemetery location: "Tick Ridge Cemetery is located on the back, back roads. If you have a Rand McNally, you could draw a line straight south of Taswell, and another straight west from Grantsburg. Where the two meet would just about put you there. There's a little church with it. A few miles to the west of Tick Ridge is another church & cemetery called Bethany Union." As I told her, the only reason I found my way from Indianapolis to Terre Haute was because it was a straight shot! I'm directionally challenged-- can't read maps--I get lost in Phoenix and I've lived here my entire life. When I go back to Indiana, I may have to rent a car with a navigation system to try to find Crawford County. (I did this when I went to San Francisco on a business trip and couldn't even make the right turn when the darn computer told me to turn. It said turn left here and I turned right. Hopeless!) Will let you know if she finds out anything for me. Carlene

22 Jan 2002 To: Carlene Warner thanks! sounds good.. jim

5/30/2002 Hi, Jim, Hope all is well with you. I wonder if you would do me a favor. I recently switched to Windows XP and lost a lot of my files, including the Laswell family reunion photo you sent me. I have recently found some more relatives (on my grandfather's side) who are in the photo, and they have corrected some of the names that were mislabeled, but I don't have the photo to match the faces with the correct names. Since finding these new relatives (75 and 80 years old) I've decided I'd better go to Indiana to meet them sooner rather than later, so I probably will try for September. I hope we might have a chance to meet for lunch or something while I'm in the area. You were a great help to me with my genealogy, and I'd like to buy you and your wife lunch or dinner. Mayme Ruth Laswell recently sent a card and mentioned that if I ever came to Indiana, she would take me to the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery to where my great great grandparents and great grandmother are buried. I am also going to try to get down to English while I'm there. Thanks for telling me about her. She's also been a great help. Regards, Carlene Warner

31 May 2002 Carlene: Glad to oblige..on one condition..you share with me the info you gain! Also, do you need any of the lists of those in the picture that we had worked up together? I may have them.. Maybe you will work up a new listing and share it with me.? If and when you come to Indiana please let us know if you will the time and place where we can meet. We would even try to arrange to meet you down in the Crawford Co area if it could work out. I know my way around there somewhat but have not been to Pleasant Ridge cemetery.. Mayme Ruth lives in the country out southeast of English. She is a sweet lady. We are fine but really busy..going to Mayo Clinic for our annual checkups, leaving on Sunday. Ruth is beginning an interim pastorate at our church since our senior pastor and worship pastor have gone to another church.. We are in transition now between pastors.. she will do great. Take care.. jim

9/20/2002 Hi, Jim, Yes, we got home last night. There was a medical emergency on the plane--an elderly woman had a heart attack or something, so we had to wait until the paramedics got her off the plane in Phoenix before we could get off the plane. Luckily we were 35 minutes early, so we got to baggage claim at just the right time for Jim to pick us up without waiting! You know how it is when you work off tight time schedules--it wasn't on his schedule to have to wait! We had a good trip-met a lot of nice people including you, Ruth and Wilbur. So glad we were able to get together. Although I didn't have any big genealogy breakthroughs on this trip, I was able to piece together some info that had been illusive up to now. I'm glad we took the time to go. I've attached the photo I was telling you about--with the really tall kid in it. It was taken about 1935 to 1938. The young girl in the white blouse is my mother. Let me know if you think this is one of Jessie's kids. Take care, Carlene

20 Sep 2002 To: Carlene Warner Glad for the good news! No..the tall boy doesn't look at all like Carl to me..or any of Jesse's boys. Thanks for the effort and thought though. When Wilbur gets the pictures to me I will scan and forward them to you. I say "when" because you could almost stake your life on him following through! later, jim...
20 Sep 2002 Jim, I forgot to attach the Laswell reunion list that I promised you.
January 09, 2004 Carlene: I hope this address still works for you. We received your wonderful card with your expressions of love and concern for our daughter. Thank you so much for your prayers and concern. At this point prayer is the only thing that it seems will do any good. We need a miracle for Stephanie to survive. We left her (after our younger daughter came) in Mayo Methodist hospital where they have done a good job of controlling her pain. Thank God for medication and Doctors who can minimize the agony of cancer. We came home for a few days to do bills, laundry, rest, ect..but will no doubt be going back. Please continue to pray for her if you will. We love her so much. We shall never be the same after this journey. love, jim n ruthie
1/9/2004 Hi Jim, Yes, I received it when I got back in town this morning. I spent some time in Sedona to attend an art show and then visited some friends there for a few days. Thanks for taking time to send the emails. I can't begin to imagine what you are going through right now and words are always inadequate when trying to express empathy and compassion. We will, of course, continue to keep Stephanie, as well as you and Ruth, in our thoughts and prayers. Carlene
9 Jan 2004 Thanks..much appreciated Carlene.. I haven't heard from Wilbur this winter so far..he is at his nephew's home in Alamogordo..where his sister Imogene now lives after her husband died last year.. I need to call him but my time has been limited.. later, jim
March 23, 2007 Subject: Dad, Mom, Aunt Katie , ect May need your help on this one Ron..might need to look at the picture of the Laswells that has me in it along with Dad, ect..to tell who the lady on the right is..anyhow, Marge is kneeling..then L to R is Dad, Aunt Katie Cox, Mom (Georgia), and if I had to guess I'd say the lady on far right is named Alberta..only because Marge was close to one of her cousins named Alberta who lived in the Terre Haute area. However, I didn't know her so am not sure and thought maybe this lady is in the large group picture that has so many Laswells in it.. I'll send this to Carlene Warner too..she may set us straight on this one.. Jim..
3/23/2007 Hi Jim, The lady on the right is my grandmother, Alma Ruth Laswell Barbee, sister of Katie Cox. Any idea when this was taken? Hope all is well with you and Ruth. Carlene
23 Mar 2007 To: Carlene Warner CC: ron@yatesville.net Thanks for the information on this Carlene..I'm copying Ron too. We're doing great Carlene..papered the kitchen recently..having new flooring put down in it now..busy, busy! Not getting any younger of course..and did you know we lost Wilbur? love, jim

2/25/2004 Hi Jim, I would be interested in purchasing one of the DVD's you are having made--but wonder if there would be some way you could let me know who was who (by clothing or description) so I could know which ones were my mother's cousins, as I would not have any idea. I'll get a check in the mail Friday. I am currently having a roll of 8mm film converted to DVD. The film was taken at a family picnic 2 days before my mother and 2 siblings perished in a house fire. It is only 2 minutes long. An uncle shot the film and it was in storage for 50 years. My cousin ran across it for the first time in January when she decided to finally go through her parent's' possessions after having stored them herself for over 22 years. It will probably be quite emotional for us to see--we've never viewed the film before and March 24 is the 50th anniversary of my mother's death. Best Regards, Carlene PS We are still keeping Stephanie in our thoughts and prayers.

February 26, 2004 Carlene: I will put you on the list. Ruth has talked of making a workup while viewing the film of who is being seen that can be read while viewing it and maybe pausing.. When we are more settled, of course. I would really like to know how you got the 8mm developed as I have a roll I never got developed. Can you share that with me? thanks.. and, thanks for your prayers for Stephanie. I am probably going there Friday and stay indefinitely.. love, jim

26 Feb 2004 Hi Jim, The film was actually already developed and the film loop had been stored for all those years without being viewed. Once my cousin realized what it was, she sent it to me and I had the film loop transferred to DVD by Restoration Video in Colorado. It will be here any day as I just got word it was completed. However, Rocky Mountain Film Lab, 560 Geneva St., Aurora, CO 80010, develops old film. I've had them develop 102-year-old photo negatives, some of which turned out well, and others not able to be processed. The photo development was not cheap--I had to pay up front for each negative without any guarantee that it could even be developed. They also do old movie film--and their web site is pretty comprehensive. http://www.rockymountainfilm.com Hope this works for you. Carlene

29 Jun 2004 Hi Jim, We just returned from New Orleans last night (hot, humid and rainy!) and read your email this morning. Then, this afternoon the DVD arrived. The check goes in the mail Wednesday morning. Thanks again for sending the DVD. I had planned on sending a check back in February, but the timing was not good with Stephanie's illness, and I just didn't think it appropriate to bother you at the time. Anyway, I'll sit down and watch it tomorrow. The "cheat sheet" will certainly help me as I only recognize you and Ruth. In April, we traveled to Orlando, Florida where we visited old work friends as well as Kathryn Laswell Chanley. She is the 88-year-old I told you about previously--daughter of Albert Martin Laswell and sister of John D. Laswell. She showed us many photos and also genealogy research done by her sister Camille before her death. She had some typed stories that Camille had dictated to Kathryn's daughter when Camille was in the last stages of cancer. One of the stories was about a time that Harry and Jessie Yates visited them when they were young children, and how all the kids played together.
Kathryn was about 5 at the time. Camille mentioned that they liked playing with "Red-Headed Ruth" as she was called, because she was so close in age. Kathryn said she remembers Ruth because she was a very pretty little girl--with really red hair. When they saw the Yates family again, they were told Ruth had died. When I got back home I looked at my FTM file and saw Ruth Yates' name and remembered that I'd obtained the info on her from you. Since Kathryn told about Ruth Yates hair color, I was wondering if your dad had red hair, and if any of the other kids of Harry and Jessie had red hair. I don't think it came from the Laswell side, but would be interested to know. My sister has a red-headed daughter--the only one in the whole family. They could never figure out where that hair came from; no red heads on the father's side either. Kathryn and Camille also stayed with Lucille Yates when they were going to teacher's college in Indianapolis. Kathryn says Lucille was a great dancer and loved to go to dances, and they all had a lot of fun together. Thanks for sending the DVD. Have you received your photos back from Colorado yet? Regards, Carlene

30 Jun 2004 Carlene: So happy to receive this communication and glad for the travels and contacts you have made! I will respond in CAPITALS BELOW:
At 07:54 PM Hi Jim, We just returned from New Orleans last night (hot, humid and rainy!) and read your email this morning. AS I STATED PREVIOUSLY THE QUALITY IS POOR..I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN TIME TO EDIT AND LIST THEM CHRONOLOGICALLY, ECT, MAYBE EVEN PUT THE "CHEAT SHEET" VERBALLY ON THE DVD BUT I WAS BUSY AND OUR PASTOR'S WIFE OFFERED TO SEND THE FILM TO HER FATHER IN LAW IN VA WHO DID THE TRANSFER FOR ME SO IT DIDN'T GET DONE PROPERLY. SORRY. In April, we traveled to Orlando, Florida where we visited old work friends as well as Kathryn Laswell Chanley. She is the 88-year-old I told you about previously--daughter of Albert Martin Laswell and sister of John D. Laswell. THE ONLY ONES OF "UNCLE DINK AND AUNT GERTIE'S" CHILDREN I GOT TO MEET WERE JOHN D. AND CAMILLE. SO SHE IS ALSO THEIR DAUGHTER? She showed us many photos and also genealogy research done by her sister Camille before her death. RUTH AND I VISITED CAMILLE AT HER HOME IN RURAL CRAWFORD COUNTY THE YEAR BEFORE SHE DIED. She had some typed stories that Camille had dictated to Kathryn's daughter when Camille was in the last stages of cancer. One of the stories was about a time that Harry and Jessie Yates visited them when they were young children, and how all the kids played together. I WOULD LOVE TO READ THIS!
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I EVER HEARD HER HAIR WAS RED. WE HAD HER STONE RE-SET (I THINK) A FEW YEARS BACK ALONG WITH DAD'S AND JESSE'S. I'LL SEND YOU A PICTURE RON SENT ME AND I AM PRETTY SURE ONE OF THE GIRLS IS RUTHIE. AS FAR AS I KNOW THERE WERE NO OTHER RED HEADS IN DAD'S FAMILY (INCLUDING DAD) UNTIL MY BROTHER ROY'S KIDS, RANDY AND BRIAN, BOTH RED HEADS, AND THEY DIDN'T GET IT FROM THE CARROLL SIDE. MY SON GREG'S CHILDREN, TERRY AND LACI, BOTH ARE RED HEADS AND NOW OUR FIRST LITTLE GGRAND, TORI, TERRY AND LYNNAE'S DAUGHTER, IS A RED HEAD TOO! UNCLE ARTHUR AND AUNT ELLA HAD ELMER WHO WAS A RED HEAD, HAD THE NICKNAME OF "RED" YATES. I THINK THEIR DAUGHTER FERN WHO DIED YOUNG WAS ALSO A RED HEAD. IT SEEMS THE READ HAIR CROPS UP EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE IN THE YATES CLA N. Kathryn and Camille also stayed with Lucille Yates when they were going to teacher's college in Indianapolis. Kathryn says Lucille was a great dancer and loved to go to dances, and they all had a lot of fun together. I DIDN'T KNOW THIS BUT SOUNDS REASONABLE. Thanks for sending the DVD. Have you received your photos back from Colorado yet? NO..THEY TOLD ME 6 TO 12 MONTHS LEAD TIME! Regards, Carlene THANKS FOR WRITING! I HOPE ALL GOES WELL FOR YOU THIS YEAR. WILBUR TOOK A TRIP TO NM TO SEE LARRY AND NANCY'S DAUGHTER, ALLISON, GET MARRIED. HE WASN'T SURE WHEN HE'D GET HOME SINCE HE WENT WITH LARRY'S BROTHER, WARDIE, WHO LIVES IN BOURBONNAIS, IL. I'M SUPPOSED TO BE PLANNING A TRIP TO CRAWFORD COUNTY, INDIANA, FOR THE WEEK AFTER THE 4TH OF JULY THAT WE WILL TAKE..WITH WILBUR, AND ANOTHER COUSIN FROM WEST SALEM, IL. HIS SISTER, IMOGENE, HAS ALZHEIMER'S VERY BADLY BUT IS HAPPY AND CONTENT IT SEEMS. HE DOES A LOT OF HER CARE WHEN HE IS THERE IN THE WINTER. HE'S AROUND 89 NOW AND TOOK A TRIP TO CANADA FISHING WITH 'THE BOYS' ABOUT A MONTH AGO. more later, jim n ruthie

June 30, 2004 Here's who I think they are..I could be wrong..I was one time back in about 1955! ha! Also, you may already have this picture.. I am pretty sure the folk in the pic are L to R: Ruthie, Harry (Bud) in front, Carl (behind), Lucille, & Marjorie Yates.

1 Jul 2004 Hi Jim, Thanks for sending this photo. I've never seen this one before. I've copied it into my FTM file, and will just assume you are right about the folks in it. I did send a copy to Kathryn Laswell Chanley (in answer to your question--yes, she is the youngest child of Dink and Gertie) to see if she recognized any of the children, but have not heard back from her. (She may be visiting her daughter in Georgia right now as she usually answers right back.) She uses WebTV and sometimes photos don't come out well enough for her to see them properly, so it may be a lost cause. Any time you run into any old photos like this, I would appreciate it if you would share them with me. I have very few. As I told you before, I didn't even know Jessie Laswell existed until started doing the genealogy research and saw her name as a survivor in someone's obituary, which then led me to find out she was my grandmother's older sister. Kathryn sent me copies of the genealogy research that Camille had done, but it didn't include the little stories I mentioned that I'd read while there in Polk City. When I sent her the Yates children's photo, I asked her if she would mind sharing those stories too. I'll let you know if she sends them, and if she does, I'll send you copies.
I watched the DVD last night and found it interesting to see the various people you've mentioned. I'm glad to have it. It's a shame that film deteriorates so much. Our picnic film from 50 years ago was about the same, but at least it was intact enough that we were able to still identify the people in it. What was amazing--although we all thought we had clear memories of that picnic, the film proved that we didn't. There were several people there that none of us remembered being there, but when we saw the film, we suddenly remembered an incident shown in the film. I guess we have selective memories. On July 9 I'll be leaving for Denver and will spend two months there at my son's. Now that I'm retired I don't have to stick around in this relentless heat! However, I will still be picking up email (can't do without a computer--I conduct all my business by computer now.) Have a great summer and keep in touch! Carlene

January 16, 2005 Ron, Do you have the original reunion photo with all the people? If so, the attached list will give you a fairly complete idea of who everyone is, and also their relationships. I was able to identify quite a few by talking to some cousins in Indiana during my 2001, 2002 visit. I've yet to identify all, but hope to someday. Time is running out--all those who can remember are now in their mid-70's or older and there are just a few left, so I'll need to take a trip to Indiana one more time very soon and try to locate them. The photo you attached is of Hurrel Edward Laswell, son of Albert Martin (Dink) Laswell. He is your first cousin twice removed. (Jessie Leah's first cousin.) I will send you an updated Laswell genealogy file soon. Regards, Carlene P.S. Did you get my note on December 17, 2004? I attached a photo with it.

March 07, 2005 Thanks for including me Ron..this is great dialogue! Glad you two are communicating. I am hoping to see more of "the Trove"! Keep up the good work! There might even be some Yates important docs in there..along with the Laswell connection..a very real connection. Did I ever relate to you of Dad taking us to English, IN to visit remaining Laswell relatives when I was 11? We stayed at "Uncle Dink (Martin) and Aunt Gertie's" home in the country. Dink was Jessie's uncle who was still alive. I am sure her parents were dead by then..but I could check the Laswell file on the family site to make sure..otherwise I think we would have visited them also. It was quite a trip and visit in Dad's '38 Buick! They were some of the finest Christian people you could ever meet, very rustic in the rural setting..church folk..but plain good people. I think they have one daughter still alive..Carlene knows all this.. I'm still anticipating a trip down there with you..Tim too if he's available..to show you more of your 'roots'. The advantage there is that both sides, Laswell & Yates, were from that area. I have to admit I know more of the Yates roots than Laswell..that's natural..but Carlene has done quite a study of Laswell for sure.. Incidentally..we're excited for your anticipated move to Charlotte! That will be a good compromise (to CA) for you..and I think it's a great area! JRY

8 Mar 2005 To: Jim Yates Info CHW To: Ron@Yatesville.net Sent: Tuesday, March 08, 2005 Ron, The only living blood relative of our grandparents is Kathryn Laswell Chanley, youngest daughter of Albert Martin Laswell and Gertrude Froman. She lives in Polk City, Florida and is 89 years old. I visited her in April, 2004. I communicate with her by email. She's amazing, still active and sharp. She is the sister of Camille Laswell Limp, who did a lot of Laswell Genealogy in the 70s and early 80s. Mayme Ruth Laswell is also still living and is 87. She is the widow of John David Laswell, youngest son of Albert Martin Laswell. I visited her in 2002, and though she couldn't help much with identifying any old photos I had, she and her daughter did take me to the grave sites of Emma Clingman Laswell and the two infants. She is also the one who copied the photo of David Morton Laswell and Mariah Catherine Curl Laswell's photo. She lives in English, Indiana. None of the children or grandchildren of the earlier Laswell's that I spoke to were of much help. I did talk to Dick Seaton by phone in 2001 (grandson of Zadie) and he was helpful in identifying some of the folks in the Laswell family reunion photo. He lives in Terre Haute, Indiana. I assume he's still alive. Hope this helps. Carlene

8 Mar 2005 To: Carlene Warner CC: Ron@Yatesville.net Carlene: I would like to have Kathryn Laswell Chanley's email address if you're at liberty to share it. It was her parents, "Dink and Gertie" that we visited when I was around 11. I visited Camille less than a year before she died.. Also have visited Mayme Ruth a couple of times. The TH Seaton..how is he related to Aunt "Zadie"(Dad called her) and uncle Harry Seaton? I was wondering if any of the pics Ron sent would be able to be identified by the big reunion pic I shared with you? I envy you guys' abilities to zap pics on anywhere you want them and whatever size you wish..is it tough to set that up with MSN? jry

8 Mar 2005 Hi Jim, Kathryn's email is marthakay16@webtv.net She is on line every day--she likes to forward to me various politically conservative stuff, and also answers promptly, unless she goes to Georgia to see her daughter. I also communicate sporadically with Molly Whooley, Mayme Ruth's daughter, and share genealogy info. Her address is morgan@epowerc.net Yes, Dick Seaton is Zadie and Harry Seaton's grandson, and son of Kernit Seaton and Katherine Puckett. (He's now 75.) When I spoke to him on the telephone, he had his wife get the old reunion photo and he and I went through each row. He named several that I didn't have, which helped fill in a few more. Between you, Dick, and my Barbee cousins, I think we performed quite a feat--identifying so many unknowns from almost 60 years ago! I looked at each photo Ron posted carefully, looking for any resemblance to people in the reunion photo, and haven't connected any yet. I had the same thought. But, I was thrilled to see the Clingman photo--I have no doubt about that one. I use Adobe Photoshop Elements 3 to size and edit photos, but it's easy to use MSN Premium to send digital photos from your files. The photos I sent to you were first scanned into the computer, edited in Elements, placed in My Pictures files, then retrieved from those files through MSN Premium "Share Photos." It is really simple. Carlene

8 Mar 2005 To: marthakay16@webtv.net Kathryn: I received your address from Carlene Warner whom I communicate with. I am Jim Yates, youngest and last of Harry Yates's children. Harry married (probably your cousin) Jessie Laswell as his first bride. She died young. Then Dad married my mother who was Georgia (Tingley) Wallace..both their first mates had died and Mom went to housekeep for Dad..they fell in love, and the rest is history! I was raised around Jessie's children that she and Dad had. We visited Dink and Gertie Laswell when I was about 11 and I will never forget that. My wife Ruth and I visited with Camille at her home less than a year before she passed and we visit occasionally with John Laswell's widow. I just thought since Carlene said you do email I should contact you. I loved your parents very much since they treated us with such love and respect when we visited. I guess Jessie's folks would have been dead by then, around 1947. Also, I saw letters Jessie's Dad wrote them after Dad and Jessie lost little Ruthie and they had a Williams, Indiana address on them. I looked and can't find a Williams, IN ? Has it been abandoned or do you know? This is all for now.. later, Jim and Ruthie...

3/9/2005 Hi Jim. nice to hear from you, Yes Jessie was my first cousin and I knew her mostly when Camille and I stayed one summer with aunt Zada and went to Ind. State college. That was 1933. We then went to Danville College up near Indianapolis in 1934. I have never heard of Williams Ind. It might have been a very small town with a post office like Magnolia used to be. The man who had the post office there also ran a store and as well as I can remember there were no other business there. Just few houses. And a grade school. It was located abut a mile or 2 from our house and my dad used to take kids in a tin covered wagon and a team of horses to school there. I went with him one time and he said "hold on to my arm,we`re going down hill" I was about 4 yrs` old. I remember a time or two when your dad and Jessie came to visit a time or two but don`t remember your mother. I guess i was married and living some where else then. Was the little red headed girl your sister? I saw her when she was about 4 and thought she was so pretty. I felt bad when mom told me she died. I lost a sister, Vivian, when she was 15. She was 3 years older than Camille. I was 9 at the time. I`m the only one left of 9 kids. Camille died in 97 and John later. I just had a birthday. 89 but feel much younger than that. I have 4 kids. My baby boy Jaye is 51 and my oldest daughter Judy is 65. I have another son and daughter. Mike and Susan. Hope I haven`t bored you with so much family history but I enjoy talking about family and friends and relations. email me any time. Kathryn

9 Mar 2005 To: Martha Chanley Kathryn: So nice to hear from you. I am happy you are enjoying the years of your life! I'm 68 but I'll never live as long as you are. I know, most people say they didn't think so at my age either..but God had another plan for them! Maybe I'll be that way too. As to Jessie..I think she died in Jan 1930, so you must have seen her earlier than 1933? I guess I'll need to email someone in the State of Indiana to find out about Williams, IN. That's where Jessie's Dad wrote her from. I knew John Laswell..visited with him a couple of times. One time he stopped to visit with my Mother after we moved her here to Casey. We have visited with Mayme Ruth some too. I remember visiting in your folks' home..we turned off the main road down a lane and made a turn at what seemed to be an orchard, then it seemed we turned east on the house. One time years later when we returned to Crawford county I drove back there. The house had burned it seemed.. I had heard Aunt Gertie died as a result of that fire? Was that true? Are you able to open pictures on your program? I have several pictures of Dad and Jesse..Dad and Mom, ect. My nephews are getting some interested in genealogy for which I am glad. They are quite a bit younger than I am and I would like to take them to Crawford County to at least show them the cemeteries and what I know about the family sites, ect, down there. I'll go for now.. Thanks for replying. later, Jim n Ruthie

April 30, 2005 Hello Carlene, is this the marker that you determined was Emma's marker at Tick Ridge when you visited? REY

May 02, 2005 Hi Ron, No, the grave marker was flat--seemed to homemade of concrete, with Emma Laswell handwritten on it. Next to it was Muriel Laswell. No dates on either. We recently moved into a new home and my built-in office furniture won't arrive until next Saturday, so I've not unpacked any of my genealogy data or photos. I believe I took some photos when I was there, however, for some reason, I didn't copy them into FTM, so I can't be sure if I did or not. I will send you a copy--if one exists--when I get my office organized. In case I didn't give you this info before, here is the burial info on Sherman: According to the records at Grandview Cemetery, Terre Haute, Indiana, the graves of Ruth and Alonzo Barbee are found in Section 2, Lot 117. The sale date was 2/24/29 for $25 and there are 8 graves in the lot. Buried in the graves are: Donald Barbee, 19d. 2/25/29, David Sherman Laswell, 70, 8/13/40, Alonzo Barbee, 62, 2/4/55, Darold Dean Barbee, 49, 3/13/80, and Alma Ruth Barbee, 85, 5/5/86. Alonzo Barbee has a gravestone supplied by the US gov. as he was a WWI veteran. The others have no markers. My intention was to purchase nice gravestones for Emma, my grandmother and Sherman, but at the time I found their gravesites I was still working and just didn't get the time to arrange it from a distance. Carlene

May 03, 2005 Hope you have that picture, it would help us I think. Have attached a second picture, Molly is pointing to Muriel's grave, Jim is pointing to a marker we examined a lot and couldn't find Emma (actually took it away and cleaned it) and beyond Jim is the David Morton Laswell & Curl marker. Good luck on unpacking! Jean and I are moving in 24 days to Charlotte, NC so we are just behind you on the task list. When you get a chance, please send me your mailing address. I will mail you a CD copy of all my photos after I complete this next round of identifying each. Once we confirm Emma's location I would be pleased to do her marker if you still want to do Sherman's. Jim Yates had contracted with a monument company to do some other work so I already have his contact information. Just let me know. With best regards, REY

3 May 2005 To: Ron@Yatesville.net CC: Jim Yates Ron, thanks for offering the CD. Would love to have it! I will make a point to try to find the photos we took that day at Tick Ridge and send a copy to you. If Molly is pointing to Muriel's grave, then Emma's grave was close. I asked my sister this morning if we actually saw Emma Laswell scratched into the stone or just assumed it, and she confirmed that we did see the name. It was faint, but there. That may be why I didn't bother to put it into FTM--couldn't be seen on the computer. At the time we were at the cemetery, I asked Mayme Ruth if she knew who kept the cemetery records. She had no idea, but I know records exist because there is a site that has the gravestone extractions for Pleasant Ridge. There are lots of Laswell's, Curl's and other relatives listed. Emma, Muriel and infant are listed, but the records don't indicate location. Emma's birth date is wrong, but it's definitely the right Emma because of the death date and the 2 children called out as hers. http://home.att.net/~Local_History/Crawford-Co-IN.htm#Sterling_Twp Look under Tick Ridge gravestone extractions. I will go ahead and contact Grandview Cemetery in Terre Haute and order a marker for Sherman and also my grandmother. When it's placed, I'll ask them to send a photo and then provide you with a copy, and you can do the same for me with Emma. Perhaps my sister and I will go back and see for ourselves. Carlene

February 08, 2008 You are correct...no heart attack...although a blockage that caused a stent...prime issue is this blessed throwing of clots....and it takes 10 mg of warfarin daily to keep me therapeutic so I won't do it again! Funny, I noticed the Effingham Dr in his report stated that "this guy chews coumadin"! ...he was trying to dally along giving me 5 mg daily expecting to get me therapeutic..I told him I had the record in my day book of what it took previously and he'd have to get me up to a minimum of 10...he finally believed me...and one dose was 15 even! Well, remember, my Dad died after prostate surgery with a blood clot...so maybe it is genetic...although lots of folk have had clots after surgeries...my first PE was without any surgery...and we sort of think the second one which occurred the day after laser prostate procedure was already coming on by itself, not sure, but probably. My left ankle was swelling a lot and now that I'm therapeutic it no longer swells...so I'm not sure... I suppose I will need to go to a "specialty house" like Mayo or somewhere to have any tests done that will tell the nature of this beast? After my first PE the cardiologist brought in a "blood Dr" who ran a battery of tests...one of them took 7 days to return...to see if I had abnormalities...and he finally pronounced me "normal"! I had all those tests and my whole history sent to my Mayo Dr...but I doubt they perused it very much and probably wouldn't unless I put my finger in their back to find out something...even then, wouldn't they probably just tell me I had to stay on blood thinner? Life is so complicated....... :-\ love you, and thanks for the advice.. jy
Ron Yates wrote: I am trying to recall this but I think it's true you have not had a classic heart attack type thing, you're issues appear to be around developing clots. I didn't press you about this but I was never exactly sure of the root cause of the problem. As I recall your doctors suggested it was genetic. If I was to suggest anything it would be to drill down more on this issue as to causation. If indeed it is genetic then your descendants have some serious things to consider as they face future surgeries and they may not even understand it. That's my two cents. Ron

February 08, 2008 Well, this is interesting...I'm reading after two people who probably know more about heart disease and the right numbers than 99.9% of the rest of us! Are there certain tests you think I might need to have...after I get these current numbers (they didn't call me yesterday!) ? jy

Ron Yates wrote: Carlene, great to hear from you, and I am so glad you shared this information with me. Part of my mission is to help spread the word as so many go to an early death really over silly reasons. Since the LP(a) is an independent risk variable I finally got around to addressing it. I really had to get on top of several which were out of balance, mostly lifestyle and diet things. Crushing chest pain gave me a little more motivation to focus. Well, and the angioplasties :-) Most of my lab values came into line except the LP(a) so I converted from immediate release niacin to Niaspan in September. I likely will do Berkeley testing gain in the next year or so to check the progress. The thing which has been interesting to me is the post prandial lipid surges which I apparently am very sensitive to; it took me until last May 2007 to get that one figured out. About a year ago my sister entered crisis mode with a heart crisis and survived so she too is now on the hunt for better health. I sat down with her and showed her all of my data and results and simply asked her to be smarter than her older brother again on this stuff! Great to hear from you, I enjoy sharing these things with you. I am tentatively planning, perhaps with my sister, a Crawford County visit in August. Jim & Ruthie Yates usually jump into the mix as well. Our excuse would be a family reunion of Roberson's, an early Yates lineage still resident in the area. Nice folks and I am sure an extra Laswell-Curl would be welcome! Best regards, Ron Yates

February 08, 2008 Hi Ron, I noticed on the Yatesville site that Rich Clingman offered more info on Samuel Klingman. I hope you'll share that with me. Also, I read with interest your info on heart disease, especially the LP(a ) levels you listed for yourself. Since we're related and you know a lot about this stuff, I thought I'd share it with you--just in case you run into any other cousins that may have this inherited situation. I took one of those diagnostic ECT tests about 8 years ago and was stunned to learn I had a 373 calcium score and was in the 96th percentile for my age, or very high risk of a significant cardiac event. The test showed moderate calcification associated with the left main coronary artery, but no calcification in other arteries. I had none of the normal risk factors, so they sent my blood to a special lab for testing (back then, only Berkeley Heart Labs did testing for the emerging risk factors). The test showed I had a very elevated LP(a ) level, over 125, so I was prescribed 2000 mg of Niaspan a day to lower it. It still hovers around 100.
I was told it was inherited and completely unaffected by lifestyle, and the only thing that could bring it down at all was Niaspan. I have unusual cholesterol levels normally--just opposite than most people. My HDL (without meds) around 90-100 and LDL 37-40. I have also been prescribed 10 mg Lipitor--not to lower LDL cholesterol levels, but to stabilize any plaque. I've had several nuclear stress tests, none showed obstruction, and a MIBI test, which also showed no obstruction. Since I take Lipitor and Niaspan, my LDL cholesterol is 29, but the my internist thinks that's all right. He doesn't think I need to have an angiogram, or any further diagnostic tests because I'm asymptomatic. Sometimes I feel like the sword of Damocles is hanging above my head! My sister also has elevated LP(a ), but not as high as mine. My brothers will not get tested. My son and daughter also won't get tested.
One of the reasons I started delving into genealogy was to try to find out from which ancestors I inherited the LP(a ). I guess I figured if I found a line that dropped dead of early heart attacks, that might have been the source. I've since come to my senses and realized it doesn't really make any difference where it came from! You cousin, Carlene

April 24, 2008 Hi Ron, The original photo was numbered by Jim Yates. Once I gathered more and more info and learned of some errors I used the method of top row, L. to R. etc. I didn't number my reunion photo. The numbers on the Laswell Reunion document only relate to the number of the person by starting with the first person in the top row on the left, etc. The photos you have that have numbers on them will not necessarily relate to my list that you attached. Does this help? Regards, Carlene
April 24, 2008 Hello you two. I remember some time ago we went through and identified the names with number of the 1947 reunion. There was an initial version then one of you created the much larger version with different numbers. That list is what is attached. My problem is I can only find the photo of the first version and the names don't match up or make sense. Could one of you send me the version of the photo with all the numbers on it please? Thanks, Ron
May 01, 2008 Hi Ron, This year I wanted to go to Indiana (the Barbee cousins are now 86 and 83 so I keep thinking I should try to go) but my husband had some serious health problems earlier this year, and I'm not yet comfortable in taking off for a week. If you get any further info from Sam Cox or others if you see them, please let me know. Have a great summer, Carlene

May 02, 2008 Hi Ron, I read Diana's email and can't quite figure out what she's saying about the two photos. I asked Paula Church (daughter of David Earl Cox) last week if she knew why her father David Earl Cox, was not in the photo, and she didn't know. She said that her grandmother, Mary, (38) holding Ted Cox (39) was probably pregnant with Sam at the time of this photo, but that can't be right. I have Sam born October 12, 1952. Her mother, Betty Cox, (58) is in the photo, as is her uncle, Clifford Cox (61). She also said that David Earl and Mary were eventually divorced and that David Earl remarried. She doesn't know any dates or details. I do not have any record of that. Maybe you can get those details from Sam when you meet. What's interesting about the Cox family is that Paula Church says she didn't know Ivy Lowell Cox or any of his family. Apparently Diana Hody and Paula Church are cousins and both live in Terre Haute if I'm not mistaken. Maybe they don't know they are related.
I've often wondered why Elizabeth Catherine Cox (Katie) and spouse Alfred, along with the rest of their children (all grown at the time of the photo) were not in the photo, but then, my dad, Carl Hegi, and my seven month old brother John were not in the photo either. I know they were there as my dad drove us to Indiana. (One thing I remember about the trip was the endless wheat fields going across the Mid-West, and then getting to Indiana and seeing the biggest trees I'd ever seen in my 5 short years!) Carlene BTW--if you ever want to check out Arizona plants, you can see my landscape by visiting my blog, http://waterwhendry.blogspot.com I the pseudonym Aiyana on the blog.

May 13, 2008 Thanks for the labeling! I sort of guessed that the three kids were the Cox kids from the reunion, but I would never have guessed that the older couple were Al and Katie Laswell Cox. She looked so different at each stage of her life, judging from the few photos I have in FTM. Thanks again, Carlene

July 16, 2008 Hi Ron, Interestingly, I just got notification from the Cox Myfamily.com site about the photo going up and I downloaded it last night. Thanks for thinking of me, though. This is the earliest photo I've seen of Katie, and I must say, I wouldn't have known it was Elizabeth Catherine Laswell. I previously shared with you a photo of her taken in a photo booth, probably from the 1930s. I don't see a bit of resemblance between that photo and the one below. Age must have ravaged folks earlier in those days. I saw on the Bruce Cox site that this photo was taken probably between 1915-18, so Katie would have been around 17-20. I don't see a great deal of resemblance among the Laswell sisters, however, there is a photo of my grandmother at 20 that shows a slight resemblance to this photo. In looking at the BAD photo of the Clingman family, I see a bit of resemblance in this early Katie photo and her mother Emma. I have not been able to get any further info on the Laswell's--I get a little info here and there, but it's getting harder to find, except for the occasional photo from distant cousins like Diana. It seems most younger people have absolutely no interest in their ancestors, and can provide no info at all. The one sister that I have the least info on is Edna Olive Schlichter. I have her obit as well as her husband's, and that's it. Both her children died years ago. I spoke to her grandson about 6 years ago, and he really knew very little. He said he had a little tin of photos up in the attic somewhere, but said he didn't know the people in them. Have you found anything new at all? Cheers, Carlene

September 05, 2008 Hi Ron, Thanks for the photos you've sent so far. When I see this photo of Jessie, obviously younger than some of the other photos, I am struck by her cheekbones, which remind me very much of those of myself and two of my siblings. One thing I noticed about the Laswell photos is the strong cheekbones displayed in so many of them, including my grandmother and her siblings. The writing on the photo referring to E.W. and the mention of lettuce I think definitely proves this is Earl Wayne Laswell Sr. The photo bears a very definite resemblance to the photo I have from my grandmother and labeled by her, as Earl Wayne Laswell. (I shared that with you before--a formal portrait of Earl Wayne with a woman listed only as Dee.) Although the speculation that the man in uniform holding the baby is Earl Wayne Laswell Sr., it bears absolutely no resemblance to either my photo of E.W. or the one you provided. In looking at various photos of the three Laswell brothers, Sherman, Dink and Peter, the man in the uniform sure looks like one of them. (Look at those cheekbones and nose!) It's hard to figure out, though, who it could be, because of the fact that your grandfather is in the photo and the child is probably one of Jessie and Harry Yates' children. (Lucille?) The Laswell brothers registered for the draft in WWI, but I have not found any records that any of them actively served as they would have been in their late 40s and early 50s. I'm wondering if it is another Laswell relative? Carlene

November 15, 2008 Oh My!! I hope you can get a copy of the photos. It would be wonderful to finally see Eva and Sherman as young people. The only photo I know of Eva is the one of the Clingman family that is so moldy and faded that it is impossible to really see her. This would certainly be a great find! Carlene

November 15, 2008 Subject: FW: Laswell Tin Plates (Pictures) I will follow up with Buck. I remember him well from the meeting last August in English. Ron
From: Henry Laswell [mailto:henrybucklaswell.11_42@verizon.net] Sent: Saturday, November 15, 2008 Hello Ron Yates I hope this finds you ok, you may not remember me I met you at the Sycamore Springs meeting early this year, I was the only Laswell at the meeting. I think Richard Eastridge has two tin plates pictures of the Laswell family, I have been working on them abt three months. I have hit a dead in, I wonder if you would like to check them out. I think they are both David Morton Laswell Family, The first one I think is tied to Sherman and Eva Klingman Laswell Wedding, It has old Doc. King and wife, David Morton and wife, David Sherman and wife ?, Peter Edward, Albert Martin (Dink) And Elzada, Two Men ?, 1 woman holding a baby?, Second Newer picture David Waring glases and wife, David Sherman and wife holding Baby, Peter Edward and wife holding Baby, Albert (Martin Dink) and Elzada, Old Doc King And Wife, A young girl abt 6 yrs may be Jesse L. Laswell. I also think I found a obt of David Morton Laswell it starts out saying ANSWERS LAST ROLL CALL Uncle David Laswell died at the home of his daughter Mrs Harry Seaton near Burnett, You may have it but I have not seen on your web site, I don't get along with this computer. very well. I hope this finds you ok, I guess I will Close This, If you would like to check out what I have dug up I will share it, I would like for some to prove wright or wrong on what i got. You Can Check with me or Richard Eastridge, Have You had any work done on tin plates, or is it safe to mess with them. Cousin Henry (Buck) Laswell Father John H. Laswell P.o. Box 421 Grand Father Logan J. Laswell English, Indiana G. Grand Father John D. Laswell Phone No. 812-365-2618 Brother Of David Morton Laswell

November 18, 2008; Thanks Ron! I must say that David Sherman Laswell is a really good looking guy from what I can discern if that is indeed Sherman. He appears to be very short compared to Peter Edward, who is listed in his draft records as being of medium height. Who knows what short and medium were over one hundred years ago! Emma's photo is obscured a bit so it is difficult to see what she looked like. If this photo was taken around 1895, I wonder where Earl Wayne Laswell was. He would have been about a year old. I looked in my records and can't find a Mary Stroud or Newton King. Thanks for posting this. This find is wonderful. Carlene P.S., Just thought I'd mention that I have met Jim Yates, Ruthie, and another fellow (forgot his name but he died in the past few years) in Terre Haute in either 2001 or 02. They drove down from Chrisman to meet my sister and me and have lunch. I wasn't sure if you knew that. I was floored that we had both been at the Laswell family reunion in 1947. Genealogy research has produced some startling coincidences over the years.

November 18, 2008; Uncle Jim told me about that trip this morning, I think that was the first I had heard you had met like that; the other guy was Wilbur Yates. I am glad you met him. Ron
November 18, 2008 Yes, it was Wilbur. He knew your grandmother when he was quite young. He said he remembered that she was tall and thin but as I said before, who knows what tall or short amounted to back then. I am 5'7" and was one of the tallest girls in my class in the '50s. My mom was 5'3", and my grandmother was 5'2". Nowadays, many girls are 5'9" or more and seem average! Jim, Ruth and Wilbur were all so nice. I was very glad to get to meet them. Maybe one of these days if you are ever in AZ or I get back to Indiana, we will finally meet. Carlene

December 28, 2008 Hi Anita, you have created a nice puzzle for me with your question below. Can I assume you have this marriage information about Bennett? Would you mind sharing a bit more about your ancestor and family to assist me in trying to do more searches? If I can't validate the connection I may need to unlink these Curls from one another which will cause a break in my major Curl line. "U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 Name: Bennett Curl Gender: male Birth Place: VA Birth Year: 1759 Spouse Name: Isabella ??? Spouse Birth Year: 1766 Marriage State: of VA" Regards, Ron Yates
December 22, 2008 Dear Ron, I have been studying your family tree on ancestry.com. I am interested to know how you were able to connect Bennett Curl and his wife, Isabella Binns to these children: Nancy CURL b: 1797 in Virginia Richard B. CURL b: 2 MAR 1804 in Virginia Samuel M. CURL b: 30 MAY 1811 in Virginia I descend from John Bennett Curl who was a son of Bennett Curl and Ezabella Binns. Ezabella is buried in Pleasant View Cemetery in Adams County, Illinois. She moved to Adams County with her son, John B. Curl and his family. Apparently Ezabella's husband was already deceased by 1831 when they moved from Jefferson Co., Kentucky to Adams County, Illinois. We do not know the location the burial for Bennett Curl. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Anita Savage

December 29, 2008 Hi Ron, Perhaps her ancestor was a sibling to Nancy, Richard B. and Samuel M Curl. My records show Bennet Curl died and was buried in Harrison County, Indiana, no date. Liahona Research LDS Family History Library: Virginia Marriages to 1800 lists his name as Bennet Curle. Hope you have a wonderful New Year! Carlene
Thanks, Ron

Regards, Carlene Ah ha……. [Carlene provided the answer to the riddle below!]

February 13, 2009 Well Hello! I didn't realize that was you; I thought it was just someone who had created the listing but didn't have any personal interest in maintaining his information. No need to do anything since I now know it's you. If it wasn't you FAG has made it an automatic process where you can pass on the management of a listing to someone else. You do that by inputting the requesting party's membership number which is shown on the profile page. You know how you finally read something again and it gives you new information? I did that today with Emma Eva's obit on her FAG listing. I guess I understood she died along with the birth of her last child. However her obit suggests she had a long illness related to her stomach. Perhaps you already knew this already. In any case, good to hear from you and I hope you are well. We are fine here. Regards, Ron
February 13, 2009 Re: David Sherman Laswell Hi Ron, It's me, Carlene Warner. I used the name Hoosier when I entered various folks on Find a Grave. I am not sure what you are asking me to do. Let me know. Carlene PS, I only use this address when visiting sites I'm not sure are secure as far as spam generation. You can write me at my usual address.

February 19, 2009 Hi Ron, This is the genealogy copy of Emma's death certificate from Crawford County that I obtained in 2002. It shows she died of Exudative Nephritis on 7/10/1905. There's no telling how long she could have had this illness or whether the cause of death is even accurate given the lack of medical info back in the early 20th century, but since her death date is 5 days after the birth of infant Laswell, it's hard not to assume that her death was possibly related to childbirth and possibly a kidney infection or other type of infection. If she had been ill for months, maybe that's why the baby died too. I guess we'll never know. All's well here except for my yearly January bout of eczema. I get it every time the seasons change, and January/February usually brings on the worst case. It moves around a lot, and this year it started on my eyelids and hands. That's a first. I think it is allergy related, but the dermatologist isn't sure what causes it. All I know is it is a miserable itchy, flaky condition. I never had this stuff until I hit 50, and it seems to get worse each year. I guess I'm lucky not to have it all the time. Carlene

April 06, 2009 Hi Ron, Here is a link to an obituary for Judy Rentz. She is the daughter of Martha Kathryn Chanley, daughter of Albert Martin Laswell. Kathryn is the elderly lady I visited in Florida years ago. I wrote to both Kathryn and Judy in January and heard back from both. I knew Judy was very sick at that time and had been to Mexico for a last ditch attempt to beat colon cancer. I've tried to contact Kathryn since, but her email is no longer working. I know Judy used to clean out her email when it filled up, and also help her with the technical details, so I suppose she doesn't have anyone to do it anymore. I'm going to send a snail mail this week. I hope she's still alive. She is now 93. Regards, Carlene

April 08, 2009 RE: Mariah Catherine Curl Obit below........ I have the latest version of FTM--had to buy it when I got my new computer with MS Vista. I really dislike it--so much that I haven't done much with my genealogy research in the last couple of months. I don't like the way it's set up--a lot more steps to see info for each individual. One thing that I've noticed with Ancestry.com is that I can now get more family trees with info attached. The only problem is, they are using all my notes and research (I recognize my own writing and sources). They are just copying it from tree to tree. I learn nothing new--just another copy of my original research! Now that you have your genealogy files available, you'll find the same thing with some of the research work you've done. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just that others copy and don't do any new research, so no progress is made. Did you receive that obit for Judy Rentz that I sent the other day? Carlene

May 28, 2009 Hi Ron, Here is the text from the Obit I got from TH Tribune years ago. Obituary, Friday, October 21, 1960, Terre Haute Tribune, page 2: "Mrs. Esabelle Burns Laswell, Bowling Green, Ind., Oct. 21--(Special)--Services for Mrs. Isabelle Burns Laswell, 83 years old, of Bowling Green, who died Wednesday will be at 1:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Rentschler Funeral Home in Centerpoint. The Rev. J. E. Reynolds will officiate and burial will be in Highland Lawn cemetery at Terre Haute. Friends may call after 2 o'clock Friday afternoon."

November 01, 2010 Hello Cousin, I hope this finds you well and happy. I realize I tried to improve this photo a long time ago and didn't have the tools or skill to do much. Not sure I would brag about new skills but I have had a little luck improving some things recently. So, thought I would try improving this one again. I am looking for a higher resolution version of this photo to work on. I can't recall if you sent this to me or not. In any case, thought I would start with you. Regards, Ron

November 01, 2010 Hi Ron, Yes, I did supply you with that photo, but now I have to try to find the original. It was with some album photos from my grandmother through one of my Barbee cousins, and from what I remember, I scanned it from an original photo. I will try to locate it--it's been so long I'm not sure where I put that group of photos. I should have something for you within a couple of weeks, as soon as I get some time to search. The original was very rough--just about as you see it. I worked with it a bit with Photoshop Elements at the time I scanned it years ago, but the moldy spots, scratches, scrapes, etc. were pretty hard to overcome. Hope all is well, Regards, Carlene

November 01, 2010 Yep, all is fine on this end. This is good news; if you can make a high resolution I can accept any size you make. I seem to able to have good luck cleaning up the scratches, scrapes and moldy spots. I am even surprised at the outcome at times. But, as they say, that is no guarantee of performance! Good to hear from you and of course no big rush, just all in good time. Regards, Ron PS. I was reading an article about Prescott, Arizona and wondered if you had ever visited or knew anything about that area?

November 02, 2010 Prescott is about an hour from us, cooler, (about 5280' elevation and population of about 35,000) and has 4 mild seasons, unlike Phoenix. We have two here--summer and a very mild winter that most folks from other climes would compare to their early summers! We drive up there a few times every summer, just for a short reprieve from the heat. (My daughter lives in Camp Verde, which is about 35 miles from Prescott, and when I drive up there we sometimes go to Prescott to check out the arts/crafts shopping available in the area.) I also go up to Prescott in late spring and early fall for garden tours and home tours--one of my favorite hobbies! The town has really grown in the last decade and in the summer, the downtown area is really congested with tourists. Lots of great little shops and restaurants on "Whiskey Row", the historic main street. Many Phoenix area folks have summer homes in the Prescott area. Home prices have held there better than Arizona in general, which has been devastated by foreclosures. The area is not particularly mountainous, more rolling hills than anything. There are some Ponderosa pine forests in areas around Prescott. It was a prime spot for kid's summer camps when I was a kid, and may still be. I attended Girl Scout Camp, Camp Fire Girls Camp, Church Camp and 4-H Camp in Prescott in the 1950s. Do you plan to visit Prescott? Carlene

November 02, 2010 You know I haven't figured out what I am thinking about honestly. For many years Jean and I have been thinking about Taos and went on-line together to schedule our trip there using frequent flyer miles. While on the website determined we were not that interested and booked a trip to Maine. It was a great visit. A few weeks ago I read a splash about Prescott in USA Today and thought I sounded pretty neat, particularly the climate. I have been encouraging my sister to reload her life out of California after our mother passes so I guess I might have been thinking more about her than me. She and I had previously spoken about her interest in Taos as well. So, maybe collecting information or maybe just learning, not sure. Sounds like you have good memories and experiences with the location. Thanks for the additional information, Ron

November 02, 2010 If you or your sis ever get out this way, send me a note and we can get together for lunch or dinner. It would be great finally meeting in person. Carlene P.S. Taos is too cold! If your sis likes that Taos vibe, she should check out Sedona, AZ. It's about 60 miles from Prescott and far more beautiful than Taos.
January 02, 2011 From: Roger Teters [mailto:teters2@gmail.com] Hi Ron EDWIN CLINGMAN's wife SARAH TETERS is my GGAunt. Attached is Peter Klingman 1789 you may find something in it you can use, or correct... Roger

January 20, 2011 Hi Ron, Thanks for passing on this info. It's always welcome. I've managed to go through all my old genealogy photos and cannot find the original of the Clingman clan you requested. That means my sister has it in her trunk, and although she promised to go through it and try to locate the photo, she still hasn't gotten around to it. I think I will end up having to go over to her house for a day and force the issue! I haven't forgotten. My husband has continued to have health problems so my search was interrupted a few times when he had to go to the hospital. In addition, I've developed atrial fibrillation (it started out of the blue in July) so that's been another issue that got in the way of my searching. Up until that time, I was a fairly healthy person, albeit with some hypertension and on a very low dose of BP medication. In July, I started having very high BP spikes and the A-Fib, so now I'm on three BP meds and an anticoagulant. What a shock!
I find this whole thing depressing and anxiety-producing and I'm still not accustomed to feeling exhausted and drugged--probably from all the additional meds but possibly from the A-Fib episodes. I initially began doing genealogy research because of the genetic component to the LP(a) that I have, and wondered if I could identify a familial pattern of early heart disease that may have been related to LP(a). Of course there wasn't any way to tie anything to such a condition, but I did get a lot of research done! I've read that A-Fib also seems to run in families, so now I'm wondering if lot of the heart problems I've found in both the Laswells and the Barbees were related to either/or LP(a) or A-Fib. My dad's side of the family seemed to have absolutely no heart disease. They all died of cancer. Seems like I may as well flip a coin! Anyway, I'm on the case as far as the photo. I'll let you know if I have any luck when I finally get over to my sis'. Regards, Carlene

May 02, 2011 Hi Carlene...I don't do facebook...Ruth does a little so we get notes from it and I see you are asking about us! Thanks for the note... We are doing well. I had rotator cuff surgery Nov 8th and it's been a long winter! Doing a little better though. Ruth has just had cataract surgery on both eyes and that has been a smashing success! She tells me she has never seen this good in her life! I am not really doing much at all with genealogy...just recording the events as they happen...births, deaths, weddings, etc. We just last week had our 6th GGchild born...picture on the family site. Ron has done such a fabulous job with genealogy that I feel my main work is done...that of getting him "hooked"! I hope your note about health issues is not too serious...I am finding that the birthdays are not helping me much! our love, Jim and Ruthie (hoping this address for you is still current)?

5/7/2011 Hi Jim, It's good to hear you and Ruth are doing well. I know so many people who have cataract surgery--with mixed results, so hearing about a really good outcome is refreshing! I've heard that rotator cuff surgery involves extensive rehab--did you have to go through that? A friend of mine has been going to therapy, as well as using some kind of cold water circulating cuff at home for 8 months now, with just minor improvement. Ron has done a fantastic job on gathering genealogy info, and is great about sharing. I really appreciate his findings, as I ran into so many brick walls over the years and just could not break through. He has provided answers to some mysteries, and I do think I've provided some clues for him. My husband has had a long list of really serious health issues over the past couple of years--aortic valve replacement and double by-pass that required a two week hospital stay and then an additional three weeks in resident rehab last year. He became very physically weak because of the long bed rest, and it took a longer time to recover because of his many other health issues, so physically he just isn't the same. As happens with some people who go on the heart/lung bypass machine, he also suffered some cognitive deficits--and although he regained much of his memory, he has a hard time sometimes with even simple things, and will probably not recover much more in that area. In addition, he has some lung problems and is chronically anemic and has to get blood transfusions every few months. To date, they haven't found a cause--even after 2 years of testing. He sees a hematologist soon to see if it is some bone marrow issue. He is 81 now, so many of these things can be expected I suppose. Needless to say, it's very stressful for me, always waiting for the "other shoe to drop", and spending a lot of time taking him to doctors, lab testing, etc. or visiting hospitals.
In the midst of all his problems, I developed atrial fibrillation and even higher blood pressure issues--both of which are exacerbated by stress. Sort of a vicious cycle. I had to start several new meds that have wreaked havoc on my energy levels and quality of life--right at the time I had to take over all the things my husband used to do. Other than all of the above, things are going well, relatively speaking. My husband's health issues are not getting worse at this point, so that's the positive news this week after the 3 doctor follow-up visits he had this week after his most recent hospital stay. I only have one grandchild, who is almost 28. He doesn't seem to be in any hurry to get married, although he and his girlfriend have dated for 6 years now, so it will probably be years before I'll see any great grandchildren, if at all, so you are lucky to have 6! It seems that young people are in no rush to get married--things have sure changed from my youth. Perhaps it's better that they are waiting longer to get married and have kids. Hope things continue to go well with you and Ruth. I do enjoy visiting the MyFamily site. I don't have as much time to visit as I used to, but I do try to get on there at least once a week. Same with Facebook. Best Regards, Carlene

07 May 2011 Wow Carlene....you guys have really "had it"! I am so sorry to learn of all the issues but will include you both in our prayers. A few years back after about 12 years of symptoms Ruth learned she has atrial fibrillation! During one of the episodes our family Dr did an EKG and discovered it. Mayo Clinic people had told her they suspected it but she would have to have an EKG during an attack before it could be proven. She describes it as you would think you were having a heart attack..it sure does a number on her. The cardiologist says it won't kill her but makes it necessary to be on blood thinner since in the "elderly" blood can pool in the bottom of her heart, then go to the brain and cause a stroke! So now, she and I are "coumadin buddies" (although I take warfarin), we have our cell phone alarms set for 5 PM and many times meet in the kitchen for our daily doses! I am a believer that many of our physical ills can be cured or improved by the diet we consume. I greatly recommend a book named "Eat to Live" by Joel Fuhrman. He backs up his claims with many studies and facts. Says he cures over 80% of his type 2 diabetics in a month or less,(off their meds). We have done his regimen mostly, and found it to be very helpful. Another one (more radical) is found at www.hacres.com by a Dr Geo Malkmus...Hallelujah Acres is the name of the entity. I figure why not try some of those things..and if they work, great! If they don't, revert. Well, today is our Gideons prayer breakfast at the motel, so gotta be going..but thanks so much for catching us up! our love, jim (n Ruthie too)

21 Jun 2011 Hi Carlene, I hope things are smoother on the family and health front for you. My mother died peacefully on May 29, 2011 so another generation moves onward. I have attached the photo you ID'd with the names added. I tried to enhance the photo a little bit but my skills in that area are still being acquired! LOL
August 01, 2011 Carlene, I am sending this in case you don't have them. Do you know Matt Barbee? Ron

August 03, 2011 Yes, Matt is my first cousin--my mother's youngest brother's son. I've never met him but have communicated with him for several years. We did meet and visit with his sister on the two occasions my sis and I went to Terre Haute in the early 2000's, along with his mother and another of his sisters. There are two more of his sisters, along with Matt, that we've never met in person. Matt is also "friend" of mine on Facebook. I have seen the photos he sent you--as a matter of fact, those were ones I sent to him a couple of years ago that came to me from another first cousin from my mother's other brother. Thanks for sharing. Hope one of these days someone pops up who has some new photos to share of my direct line. That would a real treat. I've really enjoyed seeing all the photos of Jessie Leah and her family that you have on your site. It's fun to look for family resemblances, and occasionally I'm quite surprised. My sister has a striking resemblance to my grandmother except for hair color, and my brother's daughter has some features that remind me of the young adult Jessie Leah. Regards, Carlene

September 01, 2011 Hello. I found a "hard to read listing of names" on the back of Alberta Harris Charters' copy of the photo. Is it possible to get a newly scan fresh copy of your version of the photo. If it is marked that fine; prefer a clean one but I can also clean it up myself. All the version I have are either low resolution or a little out of focus. I added you to a closed family-cousins group on Facebook. Seems like it remains very private and is likely where I will hang out versus public work on Facebook. Decided that the public side is good for attracting and finding new cousins but more and more concerned about security, etc. Also I am taking the lead in advancing the my.family website; Mostly I am interfacing it so it moves easily between the family trees, the Closed Facebook Group and my genealogy & history website. Also, have on-line photo albums connected in addition to what the family site has now. Take care. Ron

September 02, 2011 Hi Ron, I'm sure I have an 8" by 10" photo somewhere--the one I located right away is an 11" by 14", which was enlarged by someone along the way from the 8" by 10" and it is a bit fuzzy but not bad. I can't scan the larger one as the bed of my printer is not large enough. I could send it to you if you could get it back to me. If you'd rather, I'll continue to look for the smaller one and scan that. Might take me a while to locate it. I went through stacks of 8 by 10s last night with no luck. I really need to get my stuff more organized. I go so far--like making sure all photos are in certain places, but beyond that...it's a jumble. I attached the final list of names associated with the photo--the one I'm sure is as accurate as we'll ever get. It took me many years and many people and many corrections to get this final version. I did research on the Day and Jewell families who attended the reunion, and I've never found any family connection. They all lived in Terre Haute at the time of the photo, so I think they were just friends or neighbors who tagged along. Let me know which way you would prefer on the photo. I kind of think I've already given this to you, but I'm doing it again just in case.
I'm glad to see you've taken a more private route. No telling what people will do with info they gather on the internet. I suppose one could build a family tree for identity theft purposes. I know a lot of financial institutions ask for your mother's maiden name, and anymore, that's easy to get with minimal research. I'm still shocked to see my genealogy research in my own words on stranger's family files--people I don't even know or how they came about the info or even if they are related in any way. I like to verify things with my own research when I get a lead, but I think many people just copy and paste without caring if info is accurate. You've done a fantastic job on all your work and the various sites and you are welcome to any info I have. I'm don't spend the kind of time I used to doing research, but I still get an occasional twinge, especially when you send stuff my way. It sparks me to do some more. Regards, Carlene

September 07, 2013 Michael R. Pracht Subject: More pictures Hello Ron, I have attached some more pictures. I am traveling back to PA at the end of the month to help my mother clean out closets; so, I will have more to share in October (e.g. my father's birth certificate, etc). I have been looking at our genealogy on your site, but cannot view everyone. Enjoy, Peg
09/07/2013 To: Carlene Warner Subject: FW: More pictures Here are more snaps from Peg. I have sent you a couple things and didn't hear any response, you doing OK? Regards, Ron
September 08, 2013 Ron this is Heidi Carlene's daughter on moms phone. Mom is in the hospital and unable to use phone. Might be several weeks before she can personally get back to you. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. I know she would still want you to send her updates. She will enjoy them when see is able. Thanks.
September 08, 2013 Thanks for letting me know, I thought something was not right. Please give her my best regards and let me know when she is back up to speed. And, hello Heidi, we would be cousins as well. Later, Ron
October 04, 2013 Hi Heidi, I heard via Facebook about your mother's passing. I am so sorry to hear of this loss. If you can pass more any sort of an obituary or other information when you can I would be grateful. I would not want to lose contact with you but since we don't have an established relationship I will defer to your comfort level. Your mother and I shared some interesting genealogy related things and I always enjoyed her take on things. With best regards, Ron Yates

October 06, 2013 Ron- I am so sorry I did not email you before you heard on Facebook. Mom went in for surgery at the end of August and was supposed to be out in 3 to 5 days then feeling better in a week. She ended up having complications and was in ICU for a month. You can get additional information and obituary on their website www.thompsonfuneralchapel.com. Channel 12 did a tribute for her yesterday on the news for her volunteer work at the station. Following is a link if you would like to watch it. I think they did a nice job but it is difficult for me when I watch it. Heidi Rybar
