[September 6, 1954]

The fourth annual Yates reunion was held at Brown County Indiana State Park with the usual delicious basket dinner. Mr. A.L. Yates was elected President and Mrs. Wilfred Johnson Secretary. It was suggested that everyone collect information for the family tree.

The family wanted to hold the reunion for 1955 at Brown County Indiana State Park on Labor Day. [September 5, 1955]

Labor Day 1955

The fifth reunion of the Yates Family was called to order by the President, Mr. A.L. Yates. Following a discussion of the family tree, the President appointed a committee consisting of John L. Yates, Arthur Yates and Earl Yates to compile the family history of this generation.

A motion was made and seconded that the reunion in 1956 be held on the Sunday before Labor Day for the convenience of family members who live far away. It was so voted.

A motion was made and seconded, that a Chairman, to name his own committee, be appointed to select a place of meeting for the 1956 reunion. The President appointed Mr. Wilbur Yates Chairman.

Mr. Arthur Yates asked for nomination of officers for the coming year. Mr. A.L. Yates, President and Mrs. Wilfred Johnson, Secretary were elected by acclamation.

September 2, 1956

The sixth reunion of the Yates family was held at the American Legion Post in Paris, Illinois, September 2, 1956. It was noted that several of the faithful were absent due for the most part, to illness.

Following a round of greetings and visiting, a sumptuous basket dinner was served to the delight of all present including an old friend of the Yates clan; Ed Bell. Another old acquaintance made his appearance on the scene, known to most of the older known as Ed Riley formerly of the Union Chapel neighborhood near Grantsburg, Indiana. The presence of these "Old Timers" was deeply appreciated by the older members, particularly those from the Grantsburg, Indiana and immediate vicinity.

Upon completion of the meal, the meeting was called to order by the President A.L. Yates. The group was entertained by the Yates Quartet and the President requested a repeat performance at the 1957 reunion. A committee for entertainment was appointed consisting of Elmer Yates, Chairman, Roy Yates and Jimmie Yates to arrange a program for the next reunion.

A motion by Arthur Yates for the continuation of A.L. Yates as Chairman of the reunion was seconded by Kern Lankford and carried.

A resolution commemorating two departed members in the past year, Carl Yates and Wilfred Johnson, was read by Shirley Chapman and adopted unanimously; copies of the resolution to be given to Luella Yates and Dorothy Johnson.

In view of the splendid service rendered in location and arrangement of the 1956 reunion, the Chairman reappointed Wilbur Yates to handle arrangements for the 1957 reunion.

Ed Bell; Eddie F. Bell was born in 1881 in Crawford Co, Indiana; He was the son of George W. Bell and Scilitia Viola. He married Oma. She was born 1886 in Indiana; at the time of the reunion they resided in Chrisman, IL.

Ed Riley; Ed Riley was born in 1865. He was the son of Wesley W. Riley (1843-1907 buried Union Chapel) and Mariah Yates. He married Lula Froman.

Mariah Yates was born 1843 in Crawford Co, IN and died 1911. She was the daughter of Tolbert Thompson Yates and Jenny Jane McCraney of Grantsburg, Indiana. She married Daniel Harding in 1866. She married William Cox who was born Abt 1851 in Indiana. She married Wesley W. Riley.

Kern Lankford is the husband of Vera Gertrude Strine, daughter of Bessie Gertrude Yates Strine who is daughter of John Robinson "Happy" and Narcissus L. Landiss Yates of Grantsburg, Indiana.

Shirley Joan Strine Chapman is wife of Leslie W. Chapman, daughter of Bessie Gertrude Yates Strine who is daughter of John Robinson "Happy" and Narcissus L. Landiss Yates of Grantsburg, Indiana.

Carl Bernell Yates is son of Harry Elmer and Jessie Laswell Yates; Harry is son of James Wilson & Mary Ellen Ott Yates & grandson of John & Elizabeth Roberson Yates of Grantsburg, Indiana.

Luella Carpenter Yates is the wife of Carl Bernell Yates. She is the daughter of LeRoy Fremont and Nellie Mae Blakeney Carpenter residents in Edgar County, IL and Vermilion County, Indiana.

Wilfred R. Johnson is the husband of Dorothy V. Yates Johnson; daughter of Aubrey L. & Emily McClane Yates. Wilfred was the son of Harry and Emma Winchester Johnson. They were originally from London, England and settled in Bedford, Indiana.

A.L. Yates is Aubrey Lunsford Yates son of John Robinson "Happy" Yates, grandson of John & Elizabeth Roberson Yates of Grantsburg, Indiana.

Ruth Yates Collier is daughter of Aubrey L. & Emily McClane Yates.

Arthur Lee Yates is son of James Wilson & Mary Ellen Ott Yates & grandson of John & Elizabeth Roberson Yates of Grantsburg, Indiana.

Charles Elmer Yates and Wilbur Wilson Yates are sons of Arthur Lee & Ella Harmon Yates from English and Grantsburg, Indiana residing in Chrisman, IL.

Rev. Roy Francis Yates and James Robert Yates are sons of Harry Elmer & Orlia Georgeann Tingley Yates from Grantsburg, Indiana and Clark Co., IL were residing in Metcalf, IL.

September 2, 1956

BE IT RESOLVED that we, the members of the Yates Reunion assembled, express our sincere regrets and deep sorrow at the passing of two of our members, namely Carl Yates whose passing occurred October 17, 1955; also the passing of Wilfred Johnson on February 3, 1956.

This reminds us, the living, of the uncertainty of our days and gives to us a higher appreciation of the opportunity of seeing and visiting together on this annual occasion.

Be it further noted, that it was largely through the efforts of Wilfred and Mrs. Johnson that this annual Reunion was inaugurated and built to its present proportions. He looked forward to this yearly event with eagerness and anticipation of meeting and visiting with all members of the family- He was among the first to arrive and the last to depart, enjoying every minute of it.

The presence of each of the deceased members will be sorely missed by all.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be spread upon the minutes of the assembly as a permanent record, and, that the secretary be instructed to convey to the respective widows and families of the deceased a copy of this resolution.

September 1, 1957

The seventh reunion of the Yates family was held at the American Legion Post in Paris, Illinois, September 1, 1957. After the usual basket dinner, the reunion was called to order by the President, A.L. Yates. Minutes of the 1956 reunion were read and approved.

The family tree was discussed at length and the President asked all the family to be alert for additional information. The President asked for nomination for President and Secretary for 1958. Arthur Yates motioned that officers remain for another year. Harry Yates seconded and motion carried.

Elmer Yates and Marjorie Ijams are in charge of entertainment for 1958. Chairman of the committee for location and arrangements to be made later; as requested by the President, the Secretary sent a letter to Wilbur Yates thanking him on behalf of the family, for the pleasant location and the entertainment for the children. The Legion Locomotive was enjoyed by a few adults also.

No deaths reported for 1957. Welcomed into the family reunion were James Patrick Yates (August 22, 1957), son of James Yates and Mary Catherine Johnson (May 1, 1957), daughter of Richard Johnson and Granddaughter of the President.

Meeting was adjourned by the President.

It is the considered opinion and decision of the executive committee to post-pone the 1958 assembly to 1959. In part, this decision was arrived at due to the failure of the last session to select a meeting place, which, along with other circumstances over which we have no control, makes it advisable to post-pone the meeting to 1959.

ANNOUNCING THE YATES REUNION

The 8th Reunion will be at West Salem, IL, August 15, 1959 Selection of West Salem has two principal advantages, it is the more central location and, will not require the women to fix a basket of food: plenty of food will be available at less than the cost of fixing a basket.

The West Salem Chowder & Homecoming is held on this same date which will enable us to see a lot of old friends & acquaintances in addition to Yates relatives. Place of meeting will be the public square, and the band stand will be the meeting point.

Let us once more renew the old ties of friendship and good will.
