144 "The Meriwether Vindicator, November 11, 1904:

Hiram Morgan came here to the old place below Greenville, where he built his cabin home when still could be heard the hideous howl of the wolf and the distressing scream of the panther; when wild bruin [bear] yet roamed the dense brakes and jungles along these streams and the sleek deer browsed and leaped along the slopes and valleys, and rich plumaged great wild birds glistened in the morning sunlight as he strutted and gobbled on the distant hilltop---then Morgan was here, it is told, felling the primitive forest and turning the virgin soil to feed and clothe the rosy-cheeked offspring of his household and to lay by something for a "rainy day." He toiled and saved and prospered; a happy, interesting family grew up under his roof. He discharged well his duties to Church and State and in the winter of life, having competency of this world's goods, he folded the drapery of his couch about him and lay down as we trust to endless joys.

145 "They had a total of 12 children; 7 reaching maturity. A huge 6 footer, he was very athletic. A story is told that after a coon hunt, the other young men bantered him into lifting a gentle gray mare onto his shoulders. He walked 9 steps before breaking down. Another time, when hunting for bear during the fall of the year, his dogs scared up a particularly fat and lumbering creature which was too fat to climb a tree. It lumbered from the mouth of White Day Creek to Threefork Creek, a distance of several miles, with the dogs in pursuit. Jim, sprinting behind, realized his mountain rifle was not powerful enough to kill the bear, took his butcher knife, and rushing the bear, plunged the knife in [clear to the hilt].

He was Capt. in the War of 1812, and was Major Commander of Ft. Meigs, Ohio. Its said he killed the last 2 Indians around Fairmont, Marion Co., WVA, by tricking them into putting their hands into a log he was splitting, knocking out the wedges, then crushing their skulls. A wild plum thicket is said to have grown from the buried Indians provision bag. (Some say stomachs.) There is supposed to be a monument to him around the site.

James was called "Buffalo Jim" when he was young. Whether this was because of his huge size and strength; or because of his birth on Buffalo Creek, we may never know. The last couple of generations claim it was because of the latter. However, one closer to his generation, claims it was because of his size. After the War of 1812, he was most often called "The Captain.""

She said she didn't have the money to buy a real gravestone so they just put the stone with Henry on it. Evelyn Lynch Cochran) Hanover, Henry Escho (I4487)

148 (3) Vincent/Vinson has one other Robertson connection.

He vouched for the ages of both bride and groom when John Robertson m. Elenor (or Elanda - depends on who transcribed the record!) Curtsinger in Harrison Co., IN, in April 1821.

My best guess is that this John would have been a son of the Stephen Roberson who can be found near John Bell (Rachel's father, we think) in Crawford Co. on the 1820 census.

149 (3/7/211: On this date I concluded that the reference name on the headstone for William L. was in error; I believe it should read Landiss. There are no other individuals with the name Landress in the area, he is buried in very nearly a family cemetery including his father. Ron Yates) Landress, William L. (I6618)
